Imagine having just given birth via c-section to your child. You've had to wait to hold your little one until you and baby are stable, and when that moment finally comes, it's glorious. Just blissful 👶🏽💞

Now imagine, at the point of discharge when you receive an itemized bill of the charges for your stay, you read the following:

skin-to-skin contact after c-section - $39.35 - quantity - 1

Hold the phone. Am I reading that right?

(Photo on blog post: https://mom.life/en/blog/articles/mom-billed-3935-to-hold-baby-after-birth-282 )

Yep, totally read that right.

Thank goodness this mom didn't ask for skin-to-skin twice.

For a little more context, the charge is due to the staff it requires to bring the baby to mom while she is still on the table. This ensures baby is safe. But still, it would be nice if we moms could just get one freebie.

Sigh 😑

My csection in August cost $22,716. There were no complications. So, that is the standard cost here. That's quite ridiculous.

I didn't get to do skin to skin till almost 12 hours after I had my c section. I think it was detrimental to our breastfeeding relationship

We got a bill for my son, and it was over $100 just for leaving the hospital 🙄 and over $500 for the circumcision. Ridiculous

I didn't hold my itty bitty until 30 something hours after delivery, but I definitely needed a nurse to help me with all the cords and wires he was attached to. My only complaint with this story is the nurses are being paid by the hospital to help the babies, so why would this need to be an extra charge?

Its important to know what your insurance does and does not pay for so you aren't surprised. Its not unreasonable to have to pay for a circumcision as it isn't medically necessary. I do think it's crazy the amount we have to pay just to have our children, but a lot goes into it. My bcbs insurance luckily paid for everything except for the epidural in which the hospital charged me about $200 for. The hospital my sister delivered at charged her $400 for it. A bad experience with the hospital is a separate issue and why touring the hospital, reading reviews, and looking at any rewards the hospital has received is important when choosing a place to deliver.

the reason why they charge is because they have to make sure another staff member is there to hand you the child and make sure nothing happens to them , its ridiculous to charge for it tho

I believe that hospitals shouldn't charge for anything regarding the birth of your child.

paying up front has its benefits that means knowing what you will be charged for upfront. The only bills i received after I left were for the anesthesiologist and the pediatrician

I with my son I got charged for everything literally they even charged me 200 dollars each time I called the nurse to help me up. They get ridiculous with the fees my bill was like 33 thousand dollars luckily I have medical insurance I know my bill this time gonna be in the 100 thousands cause they probably gonna charge me 3 times for everything smh

@madukes, when you go to registration they run your insurance, you get all the information you need then and you can pay when you sign in

My first birth was $67,000. After insurance picked up their % we still owed almost $14,000. And that was just the hospital. Dr bills came later with lab bills... In my daughters name none the less. When I asked for an itemized bill I was given the run around for almost a month before they finally sent me it. They charged for EVERYTHING! Including 2 days nursery care at $11,000 a day. My baby never left my room, she had everything done with me and was never out of my sight. Three years later, I'm still fighting them about this charge. I should've had my kids at home and saved the money like a friend of mine did. She paid $5400 total for an at home water birth with a midwife. And was able to submit most of that cost to her insurance company.

My insurance was SUPPOSED to cover everything, but didn't. I still owe over $2500 and have already been to court for it cause I've done told them I JUST started back working and I don't have the money right now and they wouldn't except my offer for a slow pay.

She got over $5,000 taken off (payments & adjustments) for low income. I think she can pay the $40 to cover the cost of the extra nurse to make sure everyone was safe & sound. #PickYourBattles

I heard this on the radio this AM. The charge is for the nurse being in the room, not for her holding her newborn. The hospital should change the description on the billing to avoid confusion.

after my csection, my baby was 10 steps away and in my arms within 4 minutes of birth. I would have been livid to be charged for that. however they once tried to charge me double for ultrasounds because I had twins--400 a baby!

That's just ridiculous but it don't surprise me. Medical cost has became a joke these days. I have a similar issue I had a all natural birth no medicines what so ever as soon as my baby came out they said they could give me something and I gladly accepted bc I felt comfortable taking it bc I was no longer preg I had ibuprofen 3 times while in the hospital once within one hour of his birth and once in the middle of night and once the following morn with my breakfast my bill read medicines 287.00 I told my husband I should have just stuck some in my bag from the dollar store that's ridiculous. How can they get away with that I called they said that was for the iv port that they poked me 5 times bc they couldn't get a vein and then I never used it and I told them that when they were poking me some people just don't listen.
