I put my baby girls in the middle..I have a 2014 Bmw though. don't kno if every car is set up that way. I know you can put the carseat in without the base because I was with my in laws over the weekend & they didn't have the latch system, so we just put the shoulder & lap belt in the slots on the side.
Baby's always go behind the diver . They have more protection . After they turn 2 and weight a certain amount then you can turn them around and I wouldn't recommend middle unless you have 2 baby's or 3 and have no other choice

I have the latch system and mine is in the middle. It's recommended for the middle because they say it's safer in case of a wreck, less impact!

I've always heard never to put them in the middle. they can fly through the front seats. If they are on the sides they will hit the seat.
