Need Advice: I am a breastfeeding mom and so I found out that my baby is border line Jaundice. I am against formula 100% and do not want to feed my baby formula. I am more of an ORGANIC mommy due to the research I have found on formula and possessed foods.

Anyways my son's Pediatrician immediately insisted that I give my son formula until the Jaundice is all gone and to stop breastfeeding. I was not happy about that so I went home and did research on my own on jaundice. I read that if your baby has mild jaundice, all you have to do is expose them to light or pump and bottle feed your baby so you know your baby is eating well. Therefore I continued to breastfeed and pump. I also started to expose him to light. In my eyes he is looking alot better but I know it takes a couple of weeks for Jaundice to go away completely. However for his next appointment I told his pediatrician what I was doing and she was not happy with me because I did not follow her orders. She made me feel horrible so I am currently switching pediatrician.

My question is... am I wrong for not feeding my son Man made formula? Didn't God make breast on women for a reason and besides it could confuse my son, I think. Also have any of you mommies had a Jaundice baby such as my son? Do I really need to stop breastfeeding?

Good for you for sticking to what you believe! You were in the right 100%! I'm surprised that's what your dr suggested. As a mom you deserve someone who will support your parenting (choosing to breastfeed) and not belittle you if you disagree with their advice when you do your own research and educate yourself. Hope the jaundice goes away soon for your LO

Both my girls had jaundice. With my first, I just had her in sunlight a couple times a day. With my second, it wasn't going away (it was just a mild case). My pediatrician told me that there are two kinds of jaundice -- the kind everyone is familiar with, which sunlight/uv rays cure, and then there is a kind where the baby has a difficult time digesting one particular protein/enzyme that is only found in breast milk. My pediatrician told me that my baby had the second kind because her jaundice was taking over a month to go away (I am EBF). She told me the fastest way to clear it up was to feed her formula for 24 hrs and then go back to breastfeeding as usual. She said it wasn't a "must do", but an option to get rid of the jaundice. I chose not to use formula and continued to EBF her and expose her to sunlight and eventually it cleared up, but it take a bit longer because it was the other form of jaundice that she had. Long story short, continuing to BF is great! And just expose baby to sunlight and you should be fine 😊

breastmilk all the way momma! glad to hear you're switching doctors. both my kids have had jaundice. my oldest was under uv lights in the hospital for 4 days. in his case he was not eating at all and there was no way he would poop or pee without anything in his tummy. my milk wasn't coming in and whatever I did pump was not enough for him (1 oz). I had to give him formula. with my newborn, now 3 weeks old has a mild case of jaundice. his pediatrician recommended exposing him to sunlight for 15 mins, every hour. granted it has to be indirect sunlight and I run around the house looking for rays of sun to put him under. she also mentioned that breastmilk would work faster and is beneficial for jaundice levels to go down. I do supplement with formula because I don't make enough to feed him. I pump. the majority of his meals come from my boobs. keep exposing baby to the sun, continue to breastfeed, and I hope you have better luck with your new Dr.

@bremercado not to knock people that have to use it, but formula is just another money making scheme. and yep sunlight works wonders for mild jaundice 😊

@bremercado, you're definitely not crazy. But make sure it's actual sunlight you're exposing him to, not just indoor lighting. It's should clear up just by doing that a few times a day.

Breastfeeding is better for babies with jaundice. Sunlight (for a mild case) or hospital UV lights (for a severe case) is what gets rid of jaundice. That dr sounds like a moron.

That's actually the stupidest thing I have ever heard, I'm glad you are switching doctors. Continue to breastfeed mama.

Uh no...breastfeeding is WAY more better for a jaundice baby. My son had very high levels for jaundice, he had to be hospitalized for it and they had me nurse a ton!!
