Yea I would go the diplomatic route and just pick a feature you like, even just a cute yawn noise or smile or something and compliment it, you don't have to lie and say baby is cute but you can say SOMETHING is cute! LOL

I will fully admit I have met some ugly babies that still are not cute at almost 1 year and I have used stuff like that, for one friend's baby I said "omg she looks so grumpy, how cute!" and everyone agreed she is always frowning LMAO
