Just had a debate with my husband which has left me uneasy. He asked me what do I consider a single mother. I of course being a literally person said a mother who files single on her tax return. He said if a father has joint custody and pays child support that the mother shouldn't be considered a single mother because she has help from the father. He said he thinks mother who raised children without any help from the father are real single mothers. What do you think?

To me a single mother is literally single and doing it on her own. Whether he has some kind of custody. My dad had weekends but my mom was single and did it on her own
@karnamarie, yes. To most people it's the concept of not being with her father an living apart ect
@ang20 That's what I thought... lol I told most every woman and some men would definitely agree with me. To be the word "single" means relationship statues and I'm a mother so that of course falls into it
@karnamarie, yes. My friend has custody of her kid an the dad only has weekends, an has child support from him, to me she is a single mother. If both aren't together an half the time an co parent they are both single co parents. You're rigjt
A single mother to me. Is a mom who takes care and provides for her child by herself. Even if she got child support but the father wasnt around I'd consider her a single parent because she's raising that child all on her own with no help.
a single mother is a mother raising children without the help of a man, and no child support doesn't count.
@ang20 right but what about financial or custody? I personally think if a couple splits, even with him paying child support and having joint custody that because both individuals are single they would be single parents co-parenting right?
To me single mother is a mom who has to do all the work without the daddy around to help with diaper changes feeding ect. An someone who isn't with the father dating/engaged/married. Someone who lives alone an does all the work. Unless the dad has work away from them to help with income.
single mother is thriving providing working hard for her little ones.
