Failed Glucose Test but Normal Levels at Home?

Mommies that have failed a glucose test:

I failed both the 1 & 3 hour tests. So my midwifes gave me a meter and stuff to test myself at home 4 times a day. All of the days following those appointments (with that stupid drink out of my system) I've been eating the same as I normally do and my glucose levels have not been over the "goal" once. It's super aggravating and stressful to prick myself 4 times a day when it seems as if I do not have gestational diabetes. The only times my glucose was high was after that drink put so much stress on my pancreas. Has anyone else experienced this? ...Where you're glucose is over at the appointments but once you get home and eat your normal diet your glucose levels are fine? (Please don't comment if this hasn't actually happened to you. I'm looking for actual circumstances rather than positive reenforcement.) thanks!!

I was just told yesterday that I no longer have to test. I failed the one hour, refused the three hour because we don't have the time during the day to spend 3 hours hanging out at the doctor with an hour drive to and from. Bite the bullet and keep testing. GD is nothing to mess with and its worth it if you do have it. The damage it could do to your child if you do have it is worth pricking 4xper day. Since I don't have to test any longer feel free to msg me and I will send you the left over strips I have if you have the same kit ☺️

Happened to me, they diagnosed me with gd, but I have only been over 145 once and that was after eating sugary cereal. It's very frustrating to have to poke myself 4 times daily when it's never high and it take a lot of time out of my day especially when I am at work, have to stop what I'm doing and go check my sugar! Hate it, but better to be safe than sorry I guess.

as a lab technician though, I would suggest following your doctor's instructions to keep testing because GD can cause a lot of issues with babies including excess weight, low blood sugar at birth, blindness, and many other issues

Ok got it! I'd say do it at least until next Thursday...hopefully insurance covers it! If not ask them if there is a cheap machine with cheap test strips. Mine is General Electric. Good luck to you!

@mommymoo, I have an appt next Thursday and they'll review my log and go from there I guess. The booklet they gave me said below 120 2 hours after a meal, below 95 first thing in the morning.

I ended up just buying a different machine with cheap test strips the strips and machine ended up costing me less than the machine my insurance provided! Maybe just ask to retest? How long will you have to check you sugars for? What does your sugar have to be below 2 hours after? (Just curious because mine has to be less than 120 1 hour after meals...most ppl I know only have to do 2 hours)

yes, I logged my diet along with my sugar levels. they just had me stop pricking myself after I showed them for a month straight that I had low sugar levels. they actually had me eat more sugar because my sugars got too low all the time

@mommymoo, 2 hours. I'm just almost out of test strips (I have 2 left) and cvs has yet to call me back saying my prescription for them is ready and if I don't get the call I'm not going to buy them from Walmart. If the prescription cost any money I can't buy that either. We have no extra money. Especially for something I'm 100% sure I don't need. Do you think they'll be mad at me if I just don't do it?

I think they gave me the wrong strength of glucose for the test and I was diagnosed with GDM but I still follow my low carb and low sugar diet. My endocrinologist thinks it was a fluke but I still have to do it. Do you have to check your sugar 1 hour or 2 hours after meals?

@ginnalynn, they're making me write down everything I eat with the levels on a log. Did they make you do that? What did they do once you showed them your levels were fine?

mine did this except that my levels were always low with my normal diet, but high with glucose test by 2.
