You will want to put your name on it. You guys are old enough, as long as you have jobs and make enough, you shouldn't have a problem. My husband and I were young and didn't have anyone, we had to jump into a house together. Landlords are understanding. if this is your first house, you take pictures of every single thing and the second something breaks or busts, you text or call the landlord.

Y'all should put your name on the lease that way either one of you will be fine and it helps build your credit even if your don't have one. If your dad sign the lease it makes him the landlord when you have to pay him and he pays the actual landlord for the rent with the money you gaved him but this gives him the power to kick you out if he choose to do so because the lease is under his name.

why dont u guys try to find a house where they dont check your credit? thatll give u guys sometime to build up ur credit and eventually buy a house or rent a better one

yeah that makes sense, I just feel like they would choose someone with good built up credit before they'd choose someone who doesn't. but who know, I'll do it. I'm just so excited I have so many questions. and my mom said the same thing, that way we can't be blamed for anything lol @mlgh92

Take lots of pictures and make sure the date shows up on them from when you took them, ask questions even if you think they're stupid, and know your rights as tenants. And @deafmama16 is absolutely right, it's asking for problems. This is a great opportunity to show everyone you guys might be young but you're more than capable of doing this together as a couple and on your own. You get a lot of respect in the long run.

ive lived in TX and CA and some places dont, unless ur going thru am agency or youre renting from a big company. its different when youre just renting and if they do check credit, they mostly just check for past evictions and stuff of that nature

Unless your name is on the lease you aren't allowed to live there. As soon as it has been found they can evict you under his credit, which will strain the relationship. Look around before you involve anyone else and get the facts. If your old enough to get married. You should be able to figure out a lease too. Make sure to read it. A lot of places will forgive young people who have no credit to less a place. Some don't even check. If I, personally, can't do it myself. I would find a month to month. Good luck.

Yes. Tell the landlord about the room mate!!! If you don't have him on the lease you won't have legal standings to collect rent from him! If he is on the lease, and doesn't pay, you can use the lease as a legal document. If he's not on the lease, you can have a hard time proving that he was supposed to pay. And if he leaves it early he is responsible for his portion for the remaining of it or he is responsible for finding a roommate. Oh god, if I have learned anything from Judge Judy, and my own rentals, put that roommate on the lease!

As a landlord myself. It is a breech of contract of someone moves in who is not on the lease. If the contract is breeched its grounds for eviction. Your FIL, sure can sign a lease, and you can live there. It happens. If my tenants are honest with me, and don't cause problems I don't mind. Your FIL has to get the landlords permission to sub-lease the place to you.

Honestly it depends on the landlord. I rent to young families all of the time. Some turn out great, others are awful! Always be the great kind! I encourage young people to do things I their own. But at the same time, when they screw things up, I hold them accountable. I have some great tenants who are young, and are learning their way through life. I actually gave one couple a free month, because they were down on their luck. But they were great tenants! Always... Always... Always... Get everything in writing!! Even if it's minuscule! For peace of mind, those tenants asked for that month in writing! Very responsible. And if they seem hesitant, there is a reason. You'll do great. Just be honest. (Get that roommate on it too. That stresses me out for you. Most of those situations go south quick. Get everything in writing from him too.)

okay thank you so much for the advice. it's all new to me you know? lol and yeah the room mate thing makes sense, that's a smart idea since he's gonna be paying a portion of the rent & bills. since you said that now I'm thinking of having him come to meet the landlord when we get a tour of it, tell her/him our agreement and that we're gonna get it in writing so it's official. @damandakillion
