Is it better to tear naturally or get an episiotomy?

@lilkountryma, wow that's amazing! Is that what they call a perineal massage?

If you have a doctor whos smart enough to stretch you while you're in labor you may not tear at all. My mom had 4, 8 pound babies and didn't tear with any of us

Thank you ladies! I've heard mixed reviews on both so I wasn't sure. I had an episiotomy with my first but I honestly had no idea you could decide whether you wanted one or not. My dr just explained to me what it was he was performing at the moment and we went from there. Healing wasn't bad but I would like to avoid getting one this time around if it's not necessary.

tear, it takes the path of least resistance. I had an episiotomy with my first, felt like it took way longer than my tear with the second. and the tear didn't hurt as bad while healing.
