Vent/Rant: I'm about to choke my boyfriend out if he doesn't stop playing games and keep putting off getting this blood drawn that the doctor asked him to since week 9 to check his blood type and whatnot to make sure they babygirl doesn't have a chance of having alpha thalassemia. It's one thing if it was optional and they just thought it was a good idea, but they keep asking me at every single appointment if he got it done yet and keep telling me to have him get it done which makes me think it's pretty important. If I could draw it my damn self I would; his first excuse was that he rescheduled his appointment because of a job interview, then he went to a walk in clinic that lied to him and told him he needed to fast for the blood work, then there was an issue with his insurance and the rude receptionist lied again and told him that he had to pay the money upfront to get the work done (which isn't true), then his insurance got fixed and he planned on going to get it done the next day but family came over because a relative (that they weren't very close to might I add) passed away so he claimed he couldn't, then he got an appointment on a day he had off recently and he just rescheduled that one, claiming the doctor sent him a letter saying he wouldn't be in so it had to be rescheduled, mind you he goes to a center at one of our local hospitals, so he doesn't have a set Doctor that he sees, and every time I bring it up it turns into an argument, but he can ask me about stupid stuff 24/7 😒😑. Anyone else's partner get asked to get blood work done to determine the chances of baby having alpha thalassemia and did they ever get it like they were asked? I've read that it can be as mild as anemia (which is what I have and why he was told to get that blood work done) but that it could also be serious and even fatal in some cases.

@jc100495, my daughter's father wasn't involved and my son was conceived via artificial insemination, test tube baby...so no. I had to see a hematologist halfway through my pregnancy and was deemed safe to go through another c section....my friend was present for it and she said there was blood everywhere and i could tell I lost blood. it's like a 50/50 chance your baby will have it :) on the plus side, the more severe version of it is rare, although I'm sure if you've read anything about it, you freaked out right away, I know i did.
It was crazy for me, they were charting my red blood cells and it was insane to see how low they would drop, and i became very familiar with my symptoms when it happened. I really would suggest the iv iron treatments if it may help :)

@kayloniandkirksmommy, thanks for your input! I really appreciate it ❤️ if you don't mind me asking, did they make/ask your kids dad to get tested? I'll definitely ask about the possibility of severe bleeding because I've read about that and even read in a few places and heard from a few moms that they may not allow you to have an epidural or anything like that for fear of severe bleeding if you suffer from any form of alpha thalassemia. They had me see a hematologist early in my pregnancy to talk about ways to up my iron and suggested iron treatments through an IV, I might seriously look into that if that'll hopefully lower any chances my baby will have it because i tried the iron pills and they make me sick, so I'm trying to incorporate a lot more iron rich things into my diet so hopefully that's helping.

@arivera64, nothing can be done unless it's the severe version of alpha thalassemia. I have it, but both of my kids dont. @jc100495 good luck! my only suggestion would be to talk to your doctor about the possibility of bleeding severely during delivery. they didn't think i would, but i ended up losing 2 pints of blood.

@arivera64, I honestly have no idea they just keep saying for him to get this bloodwork and it's important to make sure she isn't at risk for alpha thalassemia. I've been upping how much iron I put into my diet to hopefully help with my anemia because I can't do the pills so I'm hoping that helps, I know I can't really go by what others situations are but there are plenty of moms on here who have anemia and don't take iron and aren't with or dealing with or speaking to their child's father or have no contact with them and I'm sure that some of those guys didn't get the blood work done or anything and the babies are still fine, but like I said I don't want to get my hopes up and go by others situations, I'll definitely ask at my appointment on Friday if there's anything else I can do now or once she's here because they keep telling me it's important he gets it done and I already know that and they told him that (at the only check up he went to besides the ultrasound the week before last) and all but I can't force him to so I'm going to look into how common it is, I feel like worst case scenario, she'll have anemia like me, but it'd be nice to be 100% sure that alpha thal wasn't a possibility.

Is there something that can be done prior to birth that can help the baby if he/she does have the chance of having it? The test just says if the baby has a chance, not if he/she for sure has it right? If not, i would say try not to stress. Have the baby tested immediately at birth.
