I just had to explain to my almost 5 year old daughter what transgender is. A friend of mine has a transgender sibling (born a female identifies as a male) I simply told her that sometimes girls are born as boys and boys are born as girls. All she said was oh I thought he was a girl. and then left it at that. I didn't think it would be that easy. but she has aunts that are in same sex relationships. So she's a little more understanding to that kind of thing

I'm going to be in that situation eventually.. my father got a sex change and it was pretty rough on me but I'm hoping it won't be so bad when I explain it to my daughter... even figuring out what to call him around her was kind of challenging for me since I still call him dad

@tara01, it was a lot easier to do than I thought it would be. I was expecting a bunch of questions and she didn't ask any. just keep an open mind and be prepared for lots of questions. you may have to explain it multiple times but eventually she'll understand

@themommaoffour, yeah I figured that.. I think its more me that will need to be ready for it. it took me a long time to get to where I am now haha

My husband and I have a close friend who is Trans and thankfully my son can't even tell. He knows him as clay. He has already had his breast removed and is getting ready for gender reconstruction. He has all masculine traits he just has a woman's heart when it comes to children always very kind and gentle toward our son having two special needs children of his own. So thankfully it will be awhile before an explanation is needed.
