One of my pregnant friends just asked me if my OB asked me did I have a living will or did she suggest a social worker and I'm like that's not nun of her concern and she over stepping her boundaries am I right ? I thought an OBGYN job was to help make sure the baby gets here safely right ?

No it's not overstepping boundaries. her duty as a doctor is to save lives. she's a doctor first and foremost. being an OBGYN means she's specialized in women's health basically. meaning you. if something happens to you, she wants to be aware of your requests or needs. there's nothing wrong with that. some people ask for certain things.

a pediatrician or neonatal doctor is a baby/toddler/kid doctor. they care about the baby. but again a doctor first. their specialization second.

@jojobear0819, I mean I don't agree with that at all. She 20 years old what do she have to leave to her child yet ? She was very offended by it and I understand y. That's dipping into her personal life. Like I said before her job is to help and make sure the baby enter this world safely. Everything else is nun of her business

Doctors usually ask that when you are close to your due date. Yes they are supposed to make sure nothing goes wrong, but sometimes it does and they want to make sure they know what you would want to happen.

@anessafraga, I've never heard of that At all. That's something new I'm a month ahead of her and my doctor never asked me that. I understand someone from the hospital on the day my kid is born but the doctor no way that is not okay especially to a 20 year old again she was offended at the questions and I would have been to

I would've been more scared than offended. I'm not really a problematic person though. My first thought would be, "why are you asking me this? Are you expecting me to die or have complications". I like to have a personal relationship with my doctor because they're about to deliver my baby into this world and I need that comfort and connection so its ok to get personal. I think the only time a doctor should ask that is if you are high risk and something could happen. By that would've scared me, not offend me. @anthonysmommie080116

@tomoiee95, she was scared and offended and I could understand this being her first baby but she not high risk at all. But I have a personal relationship with my doctor n she never asked me those questions n that's not her place too

Anything could happen even if she is 20 years old. My niece was a healthy 20 year old when she gave birth to her son and she coded on the table and almost died thank God they were able to save her and the baby but we never know. A living will is not something that the person will leave the child its actually for if something happens to you what are your wishes concerning your medical care in case u are not able to speak on your own behalf so I would not be offended because they just want to make sure that whatever happens to you its for your best interest

A stranger could ask me if I had a will and I'd be like "nope, not yet" and carry on with life haha never thought of that as an offensive or embarrassing question. But yeah that is a weird question to ask if they're not high risk. Could make someone easily stress or worry and think the worse. @anthonysmommie080116

Yeah she does but in some cases some peoples wishes are diffrent not to say her mother would not have her best intrest at hand but everyone is diffrent I love my mom and my husband but i still would want to make sure thay everything is possibly done to save my life if something did happen and not give up so easily....not to say they would but when my best friend died her mom made all the decesions and we all knew that wasnt what she wanted but since she did not express what she wanted or have a living will it was nothing that could be done but her mom was the type who said whatever happenes happens so no extra effort was made to save her life....she has a right to be offened but its also something to think about @anthonysmommie080116

If she is having a c-section they will ask because it is major surgery. I work in the ultrasound department and I have to ask if every patient has one but its so the hospital can put it on record.
Naura·
It's probably hospital policy, I work in the ER and we have to ask everyone over 18 if they have a living will or DPA even if they are there for a simple laceration or cough.

offended for her asking if you have a living will? she basically asked if you want them to do everything in their power to save you. if you want to be hooked up to machines or not. it's not personal when it's your doctor. you're supposed to feel safe and be able to talk to your doctor about things, if not...find a new doctor. Again an OBGYN isn't a baby doctor. she knows about pregnancy...but her main focus is the woman carrying the child. the well being of the child and she was older than 20. no 20 year old has a doctorates. it's 12 years of schooling plus additional for a specialty. it takes a long time to become a doctor.

@laurenjanelle, I understand that but she not having a c- section she only like 26-27 weeks and the will wasn't the only thing she asked about

@nj21, well I understand them asking if she have a living will the day she goes in to have her baby but this was just a regular appointment n the will wasn't the only thing she asked about

@jojobear0819, I kno what an OB is again her JOB is to make sure the baby gets here safely! Again I clearly state the will wasn't the only thing she asked about the questions she asked wasn't in her place to ask. Those the type of questions are asked once she admitted into the hospital to have her kid not before. And u don't have one either and neither do it so u can't really speak on what an OB job is. I kno for a fact that ain't part of it. Idk what nosey doctors y'all encounter but mines knows her boundaries
Jorrie·

clearly you don't know what an ob is. that's part of her job. it's apart of the preadmission paper work you can fill out early. doctor's or social workers ask you.
