Just need to vent to some mommies who will understand. π
Breastfeeding has been so important to me. Nothing wrong with formula feeding, EBF was just my goal. Well my little girl was born Saturday. Tuesday she had her first pediatric appointment and she had lost weight which is normal, but doc wanted me to come back in today for a weigh in just to make sure it was improving. Well I go in today and she's lost even more weight. I don't understand how. She's been eating for 20-40 minutes every 2-3 hours and had plenty of dirty diapers. So now I have to supplement formula and go back for a weigh in on Monday. It's so discouraging. Only five days in and my EBF goal is over with. It breaks my heart. I'll do whatever is best for her no matter what, but it still sucks. And now I'm worried the formula and bottle will mess her breastfeeding up. And add on that the stress of knowing that if she doesn't gain enough by Monday they're going to admit her in the hospital to see what's wrong. It's been a long disappointing day. π I couldn't even be in the room when she ate formula. It made me so sad. I made my husband do it.

Don't be discouraged! I had to supplement with formula also until my son got back above his birth weight & he is now EBF. Sometimes it takes a while for your milk to come in fully so make sure you offer breast first then bottle so your supply can regulate. Josiah mainly nursed but that little bit of formula did make a difference.

I'm having to supplement right now as well. I breastfeed then offer a bottle. sometimes I am able to pump an ounce and I give that to her.

I read on some forums of moms that had to supplement and were able to EBF again!

I had to do the same thing because my baby lost more then she should have at just 4 days old. I had no problems with giving her the bottle/formula and breastfeeding once my milk came in. I do still give her formula sometimes but not as much as before. She definitely prefers my milk more now then formula which is good. Don't feel discouraged, I did in the beginning and I didn't think I'd last a month breastfeeding and here I am 2 months. I give her bottle with my milk as well and no problems with her latching on. In the first few days it was a struggle but babies are smart they get the hang of it and know which is which. I do get the guilt part of giving your baby formula because you just want her to have your milk but it's not the worst thing in the world for them to have formula. I hope it gets better as I'm sure it will.

every time you supplement you need to pump so your supply will continue to increase. you're doing great!
