Do NOT supplement with formula, the average woman gets their milk in between 2 to 5 days, and until then, colostrum is VERY IMPORTANT and JUST ENOUGH!!! I can't stress this enough, colostrum is very rich in nutrients and antibodies and is called "liquid gold" for a reason, it us built for a newborn baby and is soooooo important that they get as much as they can! Their tummies are very, very small and colostrum is JUST RIGHT for them! Your baby may lose some weight in the first few days until your milk comes in, but losing about 8% of their burth weight is COMPLETELY normal and there's no need to worry, they gain is back pretty quick once your milk comes in, because the fat content is higher! Please do not offer formula or try pumping and bottle feeding until your supply is well established and your baby latches and nurses well, like it is second nature! This usually happens around 4 to 6 weeks and you will notice because your breasts won't feel engorged or "full" as often. Totally normal. Also, in order for your milk to even come in it is imperative that you feed the baby often, usually every 1 to 3 hours or more, or as they say "on demand", when the baby is awake and seems fussy...breastmilk is supply by demand, so the more the baby nurses, the more you will produce! Every bottle you offer the baby is telling your body that baby is full so don't make more! Please message me if you have further questions, I have seen too many moms who really wanted to breastfeed fall into the trap of having to supplement or switch to formula because they followed incorrect and unneducated advice regarding breastfeeding and it's a shame....Formula is great for those who want or need to use it, but is very damaging to those who want to breastfeed! Pumping can also be a blessing and a curse, because a pump cannot empty the breast as well as the baby and moms give up breastfeeding because they pump only 1 or 2oz when in reality the baby could drink 5oz or more if they latched! Keep in mind the general rule for checking if they are getting enough from the breast: Day one they should pee 1 time, day two they should pee 2 times, and so on until day five, they should pee 5 times, and every day after that they should start peeing 5 to 6 times in a 24 hour period. That, combined with steady weight gain (I say steady because every baby grows different, but as long as they gain at a steady rate they are doing good!) means your baby is getting plenty of milk, and every other "sign" such as feeding often and fussiness is NOT reliable! Never watch the clock, latch that baby on and let him or her nurse until they unlatch...change them or wake them somehow, then offer the other breast! Next feed, switch which one you started with and do the same thing. They may want to feed for an hour every hour in the beginning, but it won't always be like that, so hang in there! As they get older they can empty a breast in 5 mins flat if they want to, or 4 mins like my girl!
