my advice, if you're asking about giving your baby rice cereal is don't even give your baby rice cereal. It has no nutritional value and babies can't have anything besides breastmilk or formula until 6 months. Before 6 months their stomach lining isn't fully developed, so the cells don't fully connect together, meaning the solid food in their stomach has a high chance of leaking into their bloodstream. Solids before 6 months, and a premature gut, is not an opinion, it's science.

Some doctors may still suggest solids at 4 months or rice cereal in milk, but most doctors aren't up to date on the current "rules" set by the American Academy of Pediatrics. So they still follow the old fashioned practice they learned when they were in school, not the new practice that's been updated after research as proved the old practice to not be best.

Also, yes they did find arsenic in rice cereal BUT arsenic is a naturally occurring element found in a lot of our food, in small amounts it's actually healthy for us to ingest arsenic, and the levels they found in rice were not dangerous levels of arsenic. They were just indicative that the soil, air, and water where that rice was grown has higher levels of naturally occurring arsenic which is easily absorbed by the rice plant, not that it's necessarily dangerous or unhealthy.

I will NOT be giving Ajani any solids prior to 6 months. And then it will be the same organic things I myself eat. He is healthy even if he's smaller than my doc expected. I do not get why people rush babies so much! I'm so glad you posted this. I wanna share it.

@theinkedmommy, I don't do things just cause the doctor tells me to. I was told to supplement formula when we went home because "she lost 6% of her birth weight, if she drops to 10% she'll be admitted to the nicu" I didn't give her any because 6% was literally 3oz. and at 3 weeks she was 12lbs. formula was unecessary and could have destroyed my chances at breastfeeding. I was also told once they think she had a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and to pump and give her bottles for now on. (because she farts a lot and she was showing discomfort and they were worried she wasn't getting enough nutrients) well foremilk/hindmilk imbalance is actually a myth, both are just as nutritional as the other, I never did that and once again, now at 4 months she's 18lbs and in 6-9 month clothes and she actually had a double ear infection causing her discomfort. she still farts a lot, but that's just how she rolls. just like her daddy lol.

Yes! Thank you for posting this! I'm so tired of people saying well I did it and my baby is fine. Ugh! And everyone thinks I'm lying when it comes to this!

@eccmommy1315, I have lupus, lupus is an autoimmune disease meaning that the antibodies my body produces to fight off infections attack my bodily organs instead of infections. a simple flu can kill me, a cold can leave me in the hospital for 2 weeks. in order to have lupus you have to have genetically received the gene, and have a trigger. so if you have the gene you may never developed lupus without a trigger. babies given solids before 6 months have a higher rate of developing autoimmune diseases than babies who waited until 6 months. I was given solids at 3 months which was suggested by my ped. the usual "trigger" for lupus is usually getting pregnant and giving birth, my lupus developed at the age of 14, no known trigger at all. and I now have a.failing kidney. my grandparents never could have expected this to happen, they cared for me the best way they could, and so did my ped, and they all know better now. that's the whole point of updating research, we didn't know then but we know better now.

@eccmommy1315, please don't take this the wrong way, but "I did it and my baby is fine" doesn't mean everyone else should do it too. that's like everyone here saying "i drank castor oil to induce labor and my baby is fine" yet we all just watched the story of @tayek sisters baby unfold where she drank castor oil and in the end the baby died. the effects of solids to soon do not even show until the child is an adult, that's why research has only recently been updated, because the children they did the studies on (our generation) is only now become adults and showing the effects it has.

My husband refuses to give our kids rice cereal so we buy the oatmeal for her. But she's been eating that since she was 4-5 months old and she is just fine.
