how does castor oil help induce labor? does it really work? have you used it before? and would you recommend it (obviously would need ob OK as well )
again, not tolerating any bashing or rude comments, just curious about it. TIA

@theeonlyjeni, I used it 14 yrs ago and it was a horrible experience and did not bring labor on. My last pregnancy was told by my ob never to use it, it can cause complications.

It can be harmful for the baby. There's a risk it will cause the baby to have a bowel movement in the womb, which could cause a variety of problems. @theeonlyjeni

Not a great idea at all its rough on a stomach even when not pregnant can you imagine how it can be while pregnant. One girl came in the er she had taking so much for 2 weeks straight to slim her waist for prom that she caused her rectum and small intestines to bleed and become swollen she ended up in emergency surgery that night cause if the doctor did not do it she would bleed to death so I personally here teens doing it and some pregnant women trying it and hurting themselves. And then theres some that it doesn't effect at all.

I used it with my first never again. Lmao it gave me the worse case of "the shits" I've ever had in my life. Def did not help induce labor. Didn't have baby girl till 41w6d

The theory is that you will get such bad intestinal irritation that it will trigger contractions. In most people all it will do is give you horrible shits, hemorrhoids, and dehydration. This is all harmful to the baby as well as the intense cramps can cause distress as well as a bowel movement in utero. If the meconium gets swallowed or inhaled the baby is at risk of pneumonia and infection and potentially death. So would i recommend it? As a mother and labor professional myself....absolutely not.

I've heard negative things about castor oil. My sister used blue and black cohosh and it worked. It haven't researched it though so not sure of it's risks.

@klarrissab, blue and black cohosh are harsh herbs and should only be used under the supervision of a medical professional. Those can be very dangerous as well.

@arivera64, yikes, yeah my sister is a little crazy lol always trying to get her babies out before they are ready. I haven't done the research on it, plus I wouldn't take it.

@klarrissab, yeah it can be very dangerous. I think the only people who still actually use it as a labor inducer are old school midwives who are experienced with it.
