How do you and your SO manage to parent together when you two have completely different parenting…

How do you and your SO manage to parent together when you two have completely different parenting styles? I have a 5 year old from a previous relationship that was highly abusive and toxic. I ended as a single mom. His dad has nothing to do with him. I met my current SO end of 2013 & my son on his own started calling him daddy eventually and he's taken on that role. & we have added another baby to our family who is 8 months old. He came from a very strict family and I didn't. We just moved into our own home, before we were at my moms who spoiled my son and gave him anything and everything so he thinks that's what he's going to get out of us. But we just recently got in a fight because I don't teach my son manners blah blah. All because he was trying to get our daughter to say da da and every time he said that to her our son would say ma ma and "that's rude" then at dinner my son said "mom I want juice (paused) please" and I got him juice. He said please...that was good enough for me. Not my so, he expects him to say "may I please have juice?" But we never say may I so why should he???? I just don't understand what I'm doing so wrong... Also he used to be gone all week for work home on weekends. Now since we moved he is home every night.

Sounds like he is being a bit nit-picky

I agree with @bellasmommy516, at least he said please. Manners are manners no matter how you say it

he said please, thats what I'm teaching my son... your so is being a bit picky about the whole situation... as long as please and thank you are said, that's good enough in my opinion

Right? @eswitzer31 and he's still little... he doesn't know the difference between "may I" and "can I". To him "please" is asking nicely, which it is lol. I think maybe your SO is possibly irritated by some of your sons specific behaviors and is just looking for anything he can to pick apart.

If you guys don't say may I then your little dude isn't going to know to do that either, maybe when your man asks you for something and says can you _____ correct him to may I and explain that if he has expectations for the little dude that leading by example ? Maybe or maybe I'm thinking to harshly I'd do that to my husband tho

@kreeblim, I have been doing that. Lol. He's just being super dramatic about it all. He left, came back and got ready for bed took his pillow and now he's on the couch lol. Like over something so little. I feel my son has very good manners compared to some kids..and I don't say "may I" because I feel like I'm asking permission. I just say can you please....but the other day he asked me to get him something to drink, no please or anything. I said nope not till you ask correctly. Ugh! Men!!! Lol.
