Can my preemie baby tell the difference between formula and breast milk? He's breastfed and ever since I started producing a crap ton, they haven't given him any formula, only my milk. Reminder: I'm still at the hospital trying to get my little man to gain weight. He gained two ounces yesterday and only needs to gain one more ounce so we can go home. Well there's new nurses today and she brought his milk in earlier and I wasn't paying attention and fed it to him. It was 50 ml and usually he eats that quickly. Well he wouldn't eat all of it, only 30 of it. I thought that was odd, usually he scarfs it down. But then I waited my three hours until next feeding and I pumped before and asked the nurse if I could give him my fresh milk I pumped and she said "yeah and top it off with formula" I thought that was strange all the nurses knew he was breastfed. I filled a bottle to 50 ml and he drank all of it quickly.. Well I took the old bottle of the stuff from the earlier feeding and sat it next to my breast milk and the color and smell were completely different.. I'm pretty upset because my baby needs to gain weight, they should watch that closely so I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I feel like they gave him formula 😔😔😔

@mamamj, they told me I'm producing so much they're having to freeze it because it's overflowing the space for me.

@arivera64, there is a sign on his sleep station that says "I am a breastfed boy" I'm going to when they bring his food at six if it's the same nurses

The only thing they *might* have done, this happened to me when my son was in NICU, is topped off to make their amount if you hadn't left enough BM, but babies can tell that too

@mamamj, I thought so

I would say something and make it very clear so that everyone knows! Even if they need to leave a sign on his sleeping station breastmilk only

@santistevanmommie, I feel like they did give him formula it didn't look like my milk at all @arivera64 I am very pissed he needs to eat as much as possible to gain this last ounce and they're not watching close enough to know he's breastfed when it says it on everything I'm trying to give them some slack because they weren't here all week Rocky's been here but I feel like they should watch this kind of stuff.

how baby is feeding is well documented with the babies. there is really no excuse she wouldn't have known... and yes, they can tell a difference, my son won't take formula.

I'd be pissed. Most babies can tell the difference. Some may not care though, but some do. My son flat out refused formula when i tried to give him a little

It's possible if the new nurse didn't know. I would think they could taste a difference.
