how do you deal with toxic grandparents? here's a little back story sorry for the novel. my father has always been an alcoholic. I mean passing out drunk, never seeing his kids, alcoholic. I didn't meet him until I was 14 and felt some what comfortable enough to meet him. well about that time him and his wife at the time found out they were expecting. he stayed drunk any time I came to visit. constantly. I couldn't stand that so I gave him a choice. his alcohol or his daughter. you can tell by the tone of this what his choice was. well fast forward a few years him and his wife split due to his alcoholism. she has custody of my little sister. well he sobered up to be around her, to get visitations. yeah that made me a little sore. but what ever. well I tried having another relationship with him just to see if maybe he could finally be a father. I was due to have my daughter November 22, 2015. well since she was breech we were more looking at the 18th via c section. he wanted to be here since it was his first grandchild. a couple days before I had her (11/2/15) he calls me plastered. I honestly wonder how the man could have dialed my number. wanting to make plans to come see us and all. well him and my mother can't get along. not for her but for him he always talks down about how she done him wrong and what have you. I didn't want to deal with that, or the fact his mother who is the exact same way would have to bring him (too many DUIs lost his license). the woman constantly complains about how miserable he makes her and how she hates my mother, and my brothers father. who was also there because the man raised me he had a right to be there. well, when he called me plastered, he was calling me a bitch, whore, skank, little shit, telling me I had better call him when I have her so he can be there. due to the name calling and more so the fact he was plastered and I did not want that around me, my family, or have to have the poor hospital staff have to deal with it, I didn't tell him when the plans suddenly changed and I had her the next day after that phone conversation. his ex wife, my brothers father, everyone but him and his mom were there. of course my (I still consider her this) step mom and my little sister plastered photos of them with my daughter all over Facebook. so he found out and called me cussing me out the day after my c section telling me how much of a bitch I am how no one had more of a right to be there than him, how I'm a sorry POS, etc. for not telling him. I calmly explained to him that he was drunk when he called me I had proof he was drunk (my brothers father had given him a ride to go get groceries and he walks out with a bottle of whiskey) and that he lied to me about being drunk called me all sorts of names and that I didn't want that around me or my new family during what was supposed to be a happy time for me. so much drama that day it was UNBELIEVABLE! Anyways, it's been 6 months no contact what so ever, tells my 7 yr old little sister how I done him wrong and is waiting for my apology, then calls me this morning saying he misses me and wants to see me and my daughter. now granted my little sister knows about my son. so I am sure she told him, she is 7 after all. he wants a grandson so bad so I'm fairly certain this is the only reason he has called. I talked to my husband about it and he says there's no point in me giving him another chance after him doing this to me for 22 yrs. we don't want our kids thinking it's okay to be like grandpa, or being hurt when I have to stop him from coming around again due to his drinking. my dilemma is, am I wrong to keep my kids from him? he's sober as of right now, I returned the call and his boss answered saying he's working right now, and so I know he's sober if he's running Bob cats and bulldozers and cherry pickers and chainsaws. but do you ladies think I should? they will likely be his only grand children. I'm actually torn about this. not sure why but I am.

I'm one of those people who's nice to everyone even when they are kicking me when I'm down. so it's hard for me to hear what seems like sincerity in his voice, but know how bad he's hurt me and Not want that to happen to my kids. it really is a catch 22. @cutie22

nope, my dad is an alcoholic but not to the point what your dad does. he decided to abandone me at 17 and picked his wife over me when i was having behavioral issues. he decided to come back into my life again in 2014 when him and his wife divorced but around 2015 he stopped calling me and texting me, i told him hes either in my life or your not make a decision and he got an attitude with me and said have a nice life so i said ok. he knows im having a girl and is trying to get back in my life but i dont want him around anymore cause im tired of him hurting me telling me he wants to be in my life one minute and then the next he doesnt... i personally wouldnt allow it since especially your dad is a mean drunk. i wouldnt want that around my kids at all

@gabbator95, he's never really gotten physical. my worries are he will bad mouth me around my kids or something like that. he will never under any circumstances be left alone with them at all. @melinda2011131416 I hate hearing about dead beat parents. I promised myself I would never raise my kids in the situation I was raised in.

I just want to say that I haven't read anyone's comments, so if I'm being repetitive, I'm sorry. I honestly would not have anything to do with him nor would I allow my kids to. It's a very unfortunate situation and calls for difficult decisions to be made. You can either A: give him another chance, not knowing if you and your children will be hurt once again or B: Love him from a distance and cut all ties from him thus preventing the chances of being hurt and having your children exposed to such heinous behavior directed towards you and possibly even them as they get older. You should not feel guilty for choosing either but myself personally, I would choose B and not think twice about it. How could someone ever be so ignorant and selfish to ever place any kind of blame on you for choosing better for yourself and your children. He had his chances and he showed everyone how those chances meant nothing to him. I myself am a recovering drug addict/ alcoholic. I at some point had to make a choice and the choice I made was my children. It was hard and I loved the way being under the influence made me feel more than almost anything but no matter my excuse or my story or situation, it still ultimately came down to what was more important to me. What choices did I make....it's just that simple. sorry you're having to go through this. you and your children deserve to be chosen over an addiction any day. 💗

@maybaby2016, that's what my husband is telling me too. I'm being looked down on from everyone on his side of the family for choosing not to allow him in my children's life. their opinions don't matter what does matter to me though is they all have covered for him in the past saying he's been sober when he hasn't. I applaud anyone who chooses to better themselves over an addiction. I do. I use to believe anyone was capable. until him. I honestly don't think he is capable of breaking the addiction. so ultimately I know I will never be a first option to him, nor will my children. thank you all of you. guess my decision has been made. @cutie22 @gabbator95 @melinda2011131416 @
