only doctors should do it. you can ask, but they usually offer it, if they feel it's necessary. I never had mine swept. my son came when he was ready at 41 weeks. The purpose is to help kick-start labor.

@sweetpea_nut, yes. I think it's usually when your already dilated a little bit. I don't think they can fit their finger in your cervix unless it's dilated. But you can always ask your doctor any questions or research it.

Yea it's suppossed to make labor come on quicker. sometimes works sometimes not. I personally wouldn't do it until 39.5 weeks because these last few weeks are crucial to brain development and helping to build up the baby's surfactant in their lungs.

I had mine done Wednesday at 39+1 and still nothing. I've been 3 cm for 3 weeks now and no progress :/
