🚨 Mommies 🚨
Opinion Needed!
Pit bulls and babies/kids. Yay or nay?
If you've just "heard bad things", I know. Everyone has.
If you have first hand experience, please let me know your thoughts!
My family has pit/lab mixes. I love them! They are the best dogs! But I know that pits have a bad rap :/ I just want to see what other mommas would do.
I will say it is very hard having a puppy and a baby though no matter what kind you get!!
If you have one that's been raised in a good home since a little puppy and was raised obedient and respectful then you should have nothing to worry about. Pitts aren't usually a "danger" persay unless raised a certain way.
Agreed!!!!! Hope you get yourself a really good puppy :) Pits are wonderful. Before his parents had to give him away, my husband's pit was such a great dog. Loved him and would have trusted him around my kids. Good luck!
Pit bulls are the original "nanny dogs" now. It does depend on how they are raised, and the bloodline they're bred from, but that is with any dog. And as with any other animal supervision is necessary.
@aidensmommy, I've read about that. Sometimes full pits have a hard time with others because of their need to be in charge. :/ it's sad. But that's why I would get the pit/lab mix. With the lab in them, they are more able to adapt to living in a multi-dog home. I'm very sorry that happened though! That's heartbreaking.
@jennatess, but you still love your dog regardless! And watch them around your kids. Right? @littlepeanut91 yep, that's the hard part. Smaller breeds tend to have a complex of sensitivity and therefore lashing out when a bigger dog would have just taken things lightly and understood it was just play! But that's the responsibility of the owner, to find a balance and make sure that their family (dog included) is always safe around each other.
Chihuahuas are awesome dogs, I have one! But they're sooooooo sensitive and that can be hard when you have a baby that doesn't know they are capable of hurting the little dog! My chihuahua is definitely more aggressive than our lab/rottweiler mix. It's quite comical lol Really hoping my chihuahua adapts well to a new baby. We brought him into the family after my youngest was almost a year old, so it is all new to him!
@jennatess, that's my opinion! I would have all the dogs if I could 😅 I love them all! @mommytoabel that is great to hear! I wish people wouldn't have such a stigma to bully breeds.. Their name is deceiving. They can be and are just as loving as the common lab or retriever family dogs.
From personal experience, we've had two. One was really nice. Her name was Roxy. She was mellow. she never jumped on my sister's. she never bit anyone. she was a good dog. my mom's boyfriend thought of her as a "weenie", so he got another one named Sasha in hopes to make this one less lazy and more active. Well, Sasha would always pounce on my sister's, she's bit my brothers a few times, then one day she decided to fight Roxy (she was very ill so she couldn't fight back) and Sasha killed her. She bled to death in her doghouse. It was heartbreaking. Then recently, Sasha again attacked our Chihuahua terrier mix, who was so small and couldn't defend herself. she died. my brother cleaned it up and said there was blood and body parts everywhere. with that happening, my mom didn't want to take any chances with that dog around my sister's so they got rid of her.
My best friend has a two year old pit bull and I have never met a sweeter dog. I would let her around my son anytime!
No such thing as a bad breed, only bad owners. I think that all dogs are perfect for children as long as they are trained and cared for properly.
I'd trust a pit more than a chihuahua!!!!! lol Train it good, get the dog from a really good and trusted breeder, and you should be great!
@mommarodey, just depends on how they were raised! If you've had them since pups they will be fine. They are some of the sweetest dogs with babies. Very nurturing dogs!
@klarrissab, right?! There are so many cute pictures of pits and babies! They are such good dogs if raised right.
@klarrissab, yep. I wouldn't leave children around any dog! Even if I know how the dog has been trained. Kids are ignorant of what is and isn't okay, so I wouldn't want them to be hurt by the dog who doesn't understand that the child is unaware of triggers or things like that. In general, we would be with the dog at all times. Our kids would only be left alone with it when they are teenagers.
Look up their history, they used to be nanny dogs back in the day. They have a high pain tolerance so kids climbing on them etc doesn't bother them. They are very loyal and protective of the family. That is if you have a well trained dog and I would never recommend leaving your child alone with a dog. But growing up we had pitts and they were great with kids and babies.
I grew up with many different dog breeds and our Pitt was the most lovable one! She would sleep with my little sister in her bed even tho she took up most of the twin bed lol if you teach your kids to be gentle with dogs and teach the dog to be gentle with the kids, any breed can be a family dog :)
@nichole_lynn, exactly! That's how I feel. With any dog or animal in general, it's more nurture than nature. @mommybump2016 right, that makes sense! My husband and I are planning on getting it as a puppy, and it will grow up around our whole family.
iv seen some very well behaved pit bulls. its all on the way you raise them. but you don't want the dog to get jealous of the dog either. ( with any dog I believe as long as you raise and teach them right they will be good companions.)
I have a 3 year old female pit and she is just the sweetest. I adopted her from the humane society 2 years ago and I have never had any issues with her and the kids. She's super gentle and lovable. I agree with everyone else that has commented, it's all about how they are raised:)
