It really upsets me that the hospital I delivered at did not let me hold my baby right after birth. Instead, they took the baby aside to weigh her measure her and clean her before letting me hold her for the very first time and have skin to skin with her. Couldn't they have done that all after? All the birth videos I've watched, the baby gets put right onto the Mother's chest right after vaginal birth. I know it might not sound like a big deal but those were moments I could never get back. I'm definitely going to deliver at a different hospital and a different doctor for my next baby. Another thing they did the entire 3 days we were there was they kept taking my baby out of the room to give her shots and checkups. She would be gone for a good 30 minutes or more each time... Alot of moms have told me they were never once seperated from their babies during their hospital stay after labor. And on top of that, they lied to me and induced me at 38 weeks when I specifically told my doctor days before that I did not want to get induced and wanted her to come out on her own. I was too overwhelmed to be mad then but now that my baby's here and things have calmed down, I get so fucking pissed thinking about it!

It's normal for them to take the baby for check ups. They did for me. He was in the room most of the time but before we left the hospital he was gonna for a while checking everything to make sure he was healthy enough to go home. But next time tell them you want to hold baby before they ever clean them off. !

@hamman13, okaay. that makes me feel better thanks. and yeah I thought taking the baby out of the room was normal too for checkups but alot of moms told me their babies got checked up in the room with them not taken to a different room

Definitely look for a "baby friendly" hospital in your area. Even with my c-section, I was able to do skin to skin as soon as they were sure she was breathing properly because she was 36 weeks (maybe a maximum of three minutes?). They didn't wipe off her vernix or anything before I got to hold her. I got about 10 minutes of skin to skin before they had to finish closing me up and I was back with her within 10 minutes. From that point, she was never out of my sight except to do the car seat study on day 3 and we were in the hospital for 4 days. They taught me how to safely cosleep, all the nurses were trained in lactation, and they did all possible checks while I held her or nursed her.

did she cry right away when she came out? I didn't get to hold my son right away because they were trying to get him to cry, surprise to us he was completely healthy just a quiet little guy (:

@mom021915, she did. but not like normal babies ! she would cry for a bit then stop so maybe thats why they checked her first.

@mommytomia, every hospital is different and it's difficult to know what to ask for. Teaching hospitals tend to be the most up to speed on current practices and are generally more baby friendly. You can also look into a practice that has midwives and OB's. They worked together to give me what I wanted and needed from my delivery, even though it was an emergency c-section at 36 weeks.

For your next baby I would highly recommend Loma Linda Hospital. I haven't had my daughter yet but my sister in law had her son last week and she did skin to skin right away. Once he came out they laid him on her chest and cleaned him on her. But once they realised he swallowed some fluid they had to take him for 4 hours to do tests :/ BUT they kept her up to date with everything and explained exactly what they were doing. Loma Linda is also very strong about the Sacred Hour where it's just the mom and dad doing skin to skin without anyone interrupting them. I can't wait for my experience there in a few weeks. I've already told my doctor and family I want her to go to me right away.

Same thing happened to me! I was about to grab my baby when she came out and the Dr said they were gonna do the stuff first. But when they had to take her out of the room we went wherever she went. You have the right to be with your baby at all times 😊
