Can someone please explain how getting induced works? My ob says if I'm not dilated by Tuesday then I'm going to be induced but I'm getting different info about it from everyone and I just wanna be clear and informed on what happens and how it's supposed to go
riiight! bless your heart, same here, I'm ready to get it over with already. but I gotta talk to them about that 42 week thing, that seems too long! @jessica1006
Oh god no that's too long I'm so ready to get this child OUT! Lol @xomia
@jessica1006 oooooh! okay, yeah my doctor says they won't even think about induction until I'm at like 42 weeks, it's so weird lol
@xomia, she's not she's going to see if I'm dilated at my next appointment and if I'm not then she said she'll talk to me about induction
So why are they wanting to induce you then instead of waiting until you're past 41 weeks?
@mrssanderson, aw congrats!!! And yes!! I heard about the risk of a c section with getting induced! My friend was 39 weeks when she was induced and she was in labor for 25 hours but she wasn't dilating enough she only got to 4cm and had two failed epidurals so she had a c section! She said it was horrible and so I really wanted to ask other moms for advice!
@jessica1006, oh, okay. I'm 40 weeks tmr & have yet to dilate also. my ob explained to me Tuesday that induction is a lot more successful for those who have begun to dilate as its a sign your body is ready. my biggest fear of starting the induction process without dilation is that there's a higher risk it would result in a csection & that terrifies me so I'm trying to wait til next week 😣
@mrssanderson @emmasmomma16 @ashalay88 thank you all so much!!! I feel better now knowing more about it! @mrssanderson at my appointment this past Tuesday she checked to see if I'm dilated and I'm not so she said she'll check again next week on Tuesday and I'll be 39 weeks and 4 days then and she said if I'm not dilated then we'll talk about having me induced bc my due date is next Friday and he still hasn't moved down either
It just depends on the Dr and your body. I never dilated on my own, so they had to put a "ribbon" called cervidil up next to my cervix to thin it out and help me dilate. Then the pitocin was put in by IV later.
With me they gave me pitocin through an IV from about 8 in the morning until 5 that evening. Can't eat or drink anything just ice chips, then because I had only dilated 2cm they used these pills and started the pitocin back the next morning. by 8 they broke my water at 3cm dilated then at 4cm they tried my epidural which didn't take and at 1:26pm I had my daughter. Hope they kind of helps, but everyone is different.
Generally pitocin is started through an iv which signals your body to force contractions... generally when you're induced contractions are a lot more intense so I imagine you'll be able to get the epidural whenever once they start or maybe it'll be the same for natural labor which is when you reach a certain point of dilation. For those who haven't dilated yet, cervidil may be given before pitocin is started in order to help dilation process. If you don't mind me asking, why is your doctor suggesting induction at 39 weeks if you haven't dilated? just curious
They had to induce me early cause of my preeclampsia but they tried several things to induce me. they tried a cervidel thing that looks like a tampon, they tried two disolving pills that was placed close to my cervix and also the balloon cause nothing wasn't really working. I only got to 2cm and that's when they started me on pitocin.
@ashsloan, okay well my ob also said I could take pain meds before I get an epidural if the contractions are too painful...? She said I could ask the nurse for it but no one Ik that's been induced has heard of that
They will give you out icon in an iv and you're able to get an epidural at 5-6 centimeters displayed. You don't want to get it to early because it could wear off and you don't want to wait too long and not be able to get one at all
@breannab, so it's an iv not a pill or anything? And after I start getting contractions when am I able to take an epidural?
I feel like 42 weeks is too long! I was reading this article online and it said something about the baby not being able to get enough nutrients and if the baby is in there too long the placenta starts to die off @xomia
