It's certainly upsetting. Some of the best people I know grew up in the same situations as myself. My mother raised three kids on her own, we'd never have made it if it weren't for state funding. Not only does this status discredit the struggle of single parents or low income families, it is a direct attack on not only myself, but other members of the family as well.
