While our human bodies over time can build up a tolerance to the addictive nature of nicotine, dogs don’t have that ability. Even if a dog eats as few as one or two cigarette butts,it can kill them. The cigarettes butts have a lot of the nicotine in them cause thats where the nicotine is pulled through.

@daniellethomson like i said I try getting them away from her but I'm not about to get bit because she wants to eat them , I talked to a vet and he said she'd be fine but it bothers me I just wanted to know if that was normal in the least and if any animals do that

I would start working on a thing with the dog where you offer them a treat once they go for a cigarette. Hold a cigarette butt in one hand and a treat they like in the other. As soon as the dog sniffs at the butt say Leave it in a authoritive way. When they go for the treat, say Take it kindly, and let them have that. I did this with my dog and they stopped going after things in a week.

She may be stubborn about it st first and it may seem like its hopeless but if you continue trying it will eventuly work. It worked on mine.

They usually catch on quick and realize if they stop going for that they will get a reward.

Is your dog a shephard cause mine is. Given her breed she is pretty smart. Shes in puppy classes, and at 5 months old, already knows basic commands, behaviour, and goes outside.

if she snaps at you for taking a cigarette, pop her on the nose or her butt.

she's a small dog, and you're her "pack leader" she's not allowed to argue with the pack leader.

popping her won't hurt her but it will get her attention and get the point across that it's not okay and she's not allowed to snap at you.

but I would also do what Danielle said to teach her that cigarette butts are a no no.

@crunchymomma that's what scares me is she's only 2/3 months old and snapping and growling over a cigarette she bit me once over it and the vet told me bite her back and i did she also has a spray bottle and I have rolled up newspaper I swat at her with.:/ I've never had a puppy do this

@daniellethomson yes shes a German Shephard/Rottweiler she definitely knows better she already knows the commands sit,stay, come, and release but she's seriously being a brat:(

squirt bottles work wonders on my pit and German Shepard Pit mix.

my boyfriend beats the living crap out of her when she does something wrong, but she's more terrified of a squirt bottle lol.

your dog needs to learn good habits now because they're hard to break when she's bigger.

jumping up in bed, jumping on you when you come home, biting you, they're all cute now, but not when she weighs 100 lbs and you have an infant crawling around.

but seriously biting back works, popping them, squirt bottles, you'll find something she HATES and when you do use it when she does something unacceptable like biting... the rest of training her should be positive reinforcement.

@crunchymomma, We had a pit mix, and unfortunately sfter a while of being hit for doing wrong, he turned and got vicious, and we couldnt keep him, and I was angry that it happend. Just watch for signs of the dog look as if it feels isolated.

@daniellethomson ehh pits are big babies regaurdless of what people think about them. My dad pops the shit out of diesel with a newspaper and diesel will look at Ray and wag his tail lol they're just like every other dog if not sweeter than most. Diesel is a Giant baby regaurdless of the asswhoopins he receives he changed my view on pits

I love pits. Raised 6 pups of my own and gave them homes. unfortunately the one we kept my husband was too rough with.

My big baby before he turned :( We tried to help him, look into medication, look into training, but he just wouldnt come back from it for us. Eventually it turned into him being agressive with any other dog and he kept attack my mother in laws malamute, even tore the ear off. We had to put him down.. But we have his ashes. 😢❤

@daniellethomson, Athena is a trained guard dog. when she does something bad, like really bad, not pee in the house kinda bad, my boyfriend beats her (I don't agree with it but she's his dog) he's had her since she was a pup, she's 5 years old now. she is beyond happy. like she has the happiest disposition I've ever seen in a dog. my pit bull only gets a pop on the butt and acts like he's abused but he's never been beat in his life.

athena is a trained guard dog, her job IS to bite someone who comes on our property or threatens us. she won't turn on us, but she will attack someone else who threatened us.

but my Copper is a big fat crybaby who acts like he was abused when he's the most spoiled , babied, dog ever lol.

@daniellethomson, so please don't make general statements about my dogs based on your own personal experience. I'm in school to be a k-9/military dog trainer. I know how to handle dogs, and just because your dog did something doesn't mean ours will. and even more so, I know how to handle an aggressive dog. so if our dogs were every aggressive, that wouldn't be their death sentence because we know what we are doing and how to manage big aggressive dogs. at 7 months pregnant my boyfriends dog attacked a dog who tried to attack me, and to break it up I threw her over my shoulder and carried her home, we aren't scared to get in and break up fights.

You dont need to put that in my face, I was simply trying to give advice because I wouldnt want it to happen to you. I wish we could have talked with someone like you in all honesty given your knowledge.

We did break up the fights however, before too much could happen. The last thing we were told to do was place them in seperate areas, and every now and again try to reintroduce them. @crunchymomma

Unfortunately it wouldnt work for us, I suppose they were fighting for alpha.
