I'm a FTM and my daughter is 17 days old now. When she was born she had trouble sucking and swallowing. And at 18 hours old her blood sugar dropped very low and was in the NICU, she bounced back quickly and we left the hospital together.. But they bottle fed her what I would pump. I want to breastfeed exclusively but every time we breastfeed we finish one side and then she either falls asleep or gets mad and we end up finishing with the bottle. I produce plenty that's not the issue and she seems to be able to latch without a nipple guard but it tires her out and she falls asleep on my nipple. Should I just wait it out instead of trying to get her to finish? Help because I want to be able to breastfeed on demand exclusively and stop this pumping/ breast. I feel like we got a unfair start but I'm determined to get it. We are getting set up with a lactation consultant who will come to our home twice a week but everyday that goes by I feel like we're getting further away from it happening.. Any advice?
I told the nurses too but they needed to get her sugars stable. Your lucky you could switch! @kimberlyyyy
Thank you! I'm going to try those!! I'm trying not to get frustrated but I really want to get this down! @myliltadpole1116
Have you tried hand expressing a little on the side that you follow up on prior to latching her?your let down will flow a little faster or it could be that your let down is too fast for her since she's used to a slow flow nipple on a bottle.. It will take time because the bottle is much easier for them. From my experience even tho I only bottle feed Lucas once a week or so he latches differently after that feeding and I have to correct him. Also if she's falling asleep , try taking all of her clothes off. It should help her stay awake longer and mess with her a little. Find her ticklish spots or places she doesn't really like being touched(feet, ears etc) I'll tickle Lucas's back and it gets him to suck and swallow once or twice when he's winding down. Hang in there mama!!@kiss3sfroml33
Yeah. I told all his dr & nurses that was the plan. Anyway, my point in giving you my backstory had a purpose but I forgot. Lol. It's ok to only nurse on one side at a time and it's normal fir babies to fall asleep at breast as long as they wake up and do it all over again.
@kiss3sfroml33, it's okay to be frustrated!:) just don't let that stop you. If u need help or any assistance make sure to ask for it. I found that playing music , having water and making sure I was propped up correctly made all the difference some days. If you both get frustrated give it a minute , refocus and try again. I used to put a little breast milk on my nipple and areola as well . It helped Lucas recognize what he was aiming for and what he was gonna get if he did what mom wanted. We never did formula because he would spit it out lmao. But at the same time he wasn't gaining any weight because he wasn't latching right
