It's not recommended, usually when you're further along as well. You can for short periods though, but if you start feeling dizzy, having difficulty breathing, etc., change positions.
They say it can make it harder for the baby to get oxygen but only once they get a little bigger I slept on my back/stomach until I couldn't anything which was about 20 or so weeks
They say when the baby gets bigger it can be laying on its umbilical cord if your on your back or can lay on your spine the wrong way say they don't recommend it later on in pregnancy
The reason they say not to is because the baby can crush a really important vein of yours called the vena cava, like the first poster said it can make you dizzy but honestly I've fallen asleep on my back a few times since being pregnant and when I told my doc this she told me that you will most likely wake yourself up before any damage is done. I was a back sleeper before pregnancy so it was reallllly hard to sleep on my sides for a long while
