Do you have to eat good in order to breastfeed? My MiL always asks if I'm eating good and I tell her yea just because I don't want to argue with her (I only eat like once or twice if I'm lucky a day) but I mean, there are women in third world countries who breastfeed and I'm sure they rarely eat themselves too. She always says that if I don't eat proper meals throughout the day my milk will 'dry up' is this true??

Not necessarily! I think drinking water is more important. I think the "good eating" part is just more about the baby getting all the good nutrients and whatnot from your food.

it won't dry up if you don't eat, but you'll be able to provide more nutrients for you and baby both if you eat more/healthier

You definitely should be eat and drinking enough calories to pass along to your baby when he nurses Drs recommend 3 meals with small snacks during the day and plenty of water for bf mommas

that's not true as Kong as you keep feeding him you'll always have milk

@allizayesmom, that's not true. Supply can drop or end completely even if she feeds him the proper way

@allizayesmom, that's also not true. You can be eating 5 meals a day and still lose you're supply your supply depends on a plethora of things.

To an extent it's best to eat better. However I eat a lot of easy microwave stuff during the day and have a good dinner. Eating microwave stuff is easier during the day because my daughter doesn't nap long anymore and she's also moving in her walker now so I chase her more lol

I would only eat 1 to 2 times a day sometimes. I just didn't have time to eat ever. And I was fine. Baby was fine. They also say you have to be careful with what kinds of foods and what to avoid eating that can hurt your babies stomach. Honestly I ate everything. I loveeeee spicy food. And I ate spicy food up to a year of breastfeeding my son. And he never once reacted to it. He was a pretty calm baby. :). Just watch out. If you see your supply decreasing then eat more. If your baby cries when u breastfeed Em watch what you eat. Everyone is different.

I also heard this story of a family that was buried in a snow storm in their car. They were there for a few days. The mom died. But the babies stay alive because mom breastfeed them. Women's bodies are amazingggggg. So who really knows.

this may help. breastmilk supply can decrease with hormones, but it won't completely "dry up" for no reason as someone is saying above. it's a myth. your body will use up all of your nutrients for the baby.... probably why my nails are so brittle still lol

if you don't eat, and you don't get the amount of calories you need for breastfeeding your body can go into starvation mode and eat away at your own body's muscle tissue for the calories your baby needs. your baby will not suffer, but you will. I stuffed with anorexia till my oldest was 2 and a half because for the short period of time that I nursed I didn't eat enough calories and I didn't eat the right type of calories. I didn't eat very much, but when I did it was junk food with no real nutrients in it.

@ashsloan, your supply drying up completely out of nowhere (even if you're not eating at all) is actually an EXTREMELY rare phenomenon. basically it never happens.

@crunchymomma, I didn't say it would dry up for no reason a said a plethora of reasons why your supply can drop or dry up

Honestly all of your input has helped so much, thank you all so much ladies. I'm trying to eat but sometimes I don't have time or I just have no appetite. But I'm trying. I especially don't want to suffer from anorexia or anything else because of my poor eating habits :/

I only eat twice a day, sometimes only dinner. but I make it a point to try and eat a well rounded dinner. I try to make dinner with a meat and at least two sides, one of which I try to make sure is some sort of veggies. what helps a lot is I buy large bags of frozen mixed veggies from walmart and cook them multiple different ways. I also do my best to make oatmeal that i cooked overnight in a slow cooker or a smoothie for breakfast in the mornings (buying bags of frozen fruit from walmart made this extremely quick and easy). smoothies are real quick, and nutritious and even better you can make lactation smoothies (look them up on pinterest. they're really easy to make) so it doubles as a healthy breakfast and a supply boost. other than that I drink water and juice all day, I actually like the v8 fruit juices that have "hidden" veggies in them (you can't taste them)
so while I only eat 1, maybe 2 times a day I'm making sure I'm getting enough good nutrients to maintain a healthy weight.

Oh wow, that actually all sounds really good! I already do smoothies about every other day but I'll try and make them daily since they can be done fairly quickly and thank you for the tip on the lactation smoothies! I hadn't even thought of that! I suffered from anorexia in high school and it was not fun, so I really don't wanna go through that again, again, thank you :•) @crunchymomma
