We had our last birth class last night and were talking about car seat safety. The nurse said they recommend that you DO NOT allow your child to stay sleeping in their car seat once you get home. She said there have been 2 recent cases where the infant strangled themselves because the mom unbuckled the bottom part but left the one across the chest buckled and the baby slid down and got their neck stuck on the top part. Very scary and I'm sure it can happen, but what if you just leave it all buckled? Why wake a sleeping baby just to take them out of their car seat? What's everyone else's views on this?

Car seats are made to sit at a 45° angle when installed into the base which keeps your baby in a safe position. When you just set them on the floor they rock forward and your baby leans into that which can close their windpipe and cause them to suffocate. That's why they say not to let your baby sleep in the carseat once you're home. But I feel like if you have something to help the seat lean back like it would in the car then the babies head should lay back and they'll be able to breathe.

one of my sisters lost her first born to SIDS so when the twins came along she was terrified the same would happen to them, her pediatrician told her to have them sleep in the car seats (upright position for better lung expansion). they slept that way their entire first year.

when I had my firstborn I was in a really bad situation and his first month that's where he slept, either completely strapped in or completely unstrapped. I think its all about common sense and a lot of ppl don't have that unfortunately :(

Not to scare you, but I've seen 2 cases where a baby's neck would fall in a funny way and block their windpipe thus suffocating the sleeping baby :(
