I used them with my son and intend to with my daughter. They say that it's a risk of suffocation, but after babies can turn their heads on their own its nature to turn your head into fresh air. If you're worried about bumpers but want them, there are breathable mesh bumpers so that it reduces the risk. My son got caught in the bars when we didn't have them, but he never had his face against them.

I've alway used them with my son. he's never pressed his face into the sides if his crib I put them on because when he started moving he would get his arms and legs stuck thru the bars in the crib

They can be dangerous I would recommend a mesh one that they can breath through if they happen to roll over and there face is facing the bumper
