Don't be too scared- there are people like me that are white but will fight to the end of time to make sure he's treated fairly and I will raise my son to do the same. On the outside people see my color what they don't know is I have a Masters in International Relations with a focus in Sub-Saharan Africa, spend my free time at cultural events and hanging with my friends from around the world, and my SO is a very dark skinned Ethiopian. Just know that he will also grow up surrounded by people that may look different than him but they may still be fighting his fight for equality and he doesn't even know it. :-)

@rgaine, I love that there are ppl like u and ur SO out there in the world. And I know that ppl not of my race that's fighting the fight along with the rest of us. I really appreciate ur comment. It's the Travis Martins and mike Browns stories that make me scared then I'm also from New Orleans and still live here and crime here and everything is at its highest it's a scary thing to think about u know. But I'm glad there are parents out there like u that will raise their kids right ☺️☺️

@babybird080316, I live in st Louis, I was there during all the mike brown things that were going on and being a mom of 3 black sons it was terrible! and what's even worst is the media didn't correctly cover everything, the protesters only started the quick trip fire, the national guard and kkk members were starting all the other fires, everything was crazy my mom said she hadn't seen anything so bad since the police best Rodney King.

@mrshamilton830, wow that's crazy. The media makes us look terrible. I've always said that the media only shows what they want which is the reason I don't watch the news but they are liars.

@babybird080316, trees they are majority of the protesters were peaceful they did shut stores and highways down but they were peaceful and police still came with dogs, tear gas, army trucks and it's one of our rights to peacefully assemble, and Ferguson ended up paying out over 2 million dollars due to civil right lawsuits

I hear you- this world is a mess in so many ways and the fight for equality (all types) is far from over. I just try to do my little part. Lived in Sulphur LA for a bit and was just in NO last May as I was gonna buy a condo there but decided to stay here. It's tough there but know that if you teach him that he can do anything. Be anything, and go anywhere... He will! He may start there but he may end up somewhere amazing because of the tough lessons learned early. One of the reasons I moved to DC was the diversity. I lived in Oklahoma and let's just say that dating outside of my race in the 90s didn't draw great service at restaurants or comments from strangers. My dad's only words and I'll never forget them were.. "Just know that the road you have chosen is not the easy one..." He always supported me, defended my relationships, and though we never talked about civil rights specifically when he died I found several civil rights and MLK books in his small stack of belongings. It showed me that his actions and how he treated everyone with respect and fought for the rights of others was passed down through actions, not words. You and I can do the same for our boys. :-)

@babybird080316, Yeah, dad was a great guy- thank you. Lost him on my birthday two years ago this May- still feels like yesterday but he sure taught us well to carry on the good lessons. Just wish he was here to meet his first grandbaby. Maybe someday our kids will cross paths- I hope so!

@rgaine, yea I feel the same way about my dad I lost him when I was 10 I'm naming my son after him and I hope our kids do cross paths one day that would be so awesome

@babybird080316, sorry to hear that. :-(. Cool- I'm also naming my son after my dad.... Sorta. My dad was John and I'm part Welsh and the Welsh equivalent is Evan.. so that will be his middle name. Two family history birds with one stone.
