I was told by the ss office you have to go to the dmv first and change your last name on your license. Then to the ss office because they need to see your ID with the new name on it. Of course take a certified copy of your marriage license to both places. I just did it last year

If your dl is not expiring it may be free.

I'm in Texas I think mine was 24.00 but only bc I waited til my maiden dl expired bc it was like 5 months after my marriage. But before u go to dmv u need to go to SS with ur maiden ss card and marriage lic. I think I took my birth certificate as well but don't remember if they needed it. You will get to choose the name you wish to go by at the SS then u take ur new ss and old dl to dmv. That's the order I did mine. FYI it has to be the official marriage lic and they also take ur old SS which I wanted to keep and was mad. But nothing I could do. If u plan on needing old SS I would apply for new one then wait a month and take new maiden SS that way u still have ur supposed lost one to keep.

You have to go to the DMV and the cost varied from states so idk since I'm in TN and don't even know the cost of mine but hopefully I get to change my name tomorrow :)
