someone asked me this question and I wasn't 100% sure of the answer, maybe you guys can help? if you breastfeed and also smoke weed, does any of the THC go to the baby? I have done little research and found that none actually goes to the baby.. but you can't believe everything you read online.
@navywife_west, in our town if you fail for heroin they rehabilitate your addicted new born and then give it back.
@kelseys, Oregon. Washington and Colorado legalized recerational and medical marijuana use. Other states like California legalized just medical marijuana. @babynumber1 definitely should be a lot more research on marijuana use while pregnant and breast feeding. I personally know a few mom's who smoke while pregnant and their babies were just fine. But I'm a huge believer in seeing new research, not research from 10+ years ago
they normally drug test you when you go in to give birth they normally don't say anything about it but if you fail they will then ask to test the baby and go from there.. my dad's ex wife got my sister taken away from our family cuz she fails for myth and then the baby failed too.. so my 3 year old sister has been in foster care since the day she came home from the hospital @babynumber1
weed is only legal in some states because of medical reasons, not just for fun. but if you have a medical reason to smoke it from a doctor and need to, then you should ask the doctor because us women can give so many different answered, no and yes or our personal experiences but its best you get that info from your doctor because our bodies and babies aren't the same.
I asked a woman in my family this who smokes currently and has breastfed all five of her children and went to La Leche groups.... she said some women still smoke cigarettes while breatfeeding and I've read that there's no risk smoking cigarettes but with weed, if you smoke enough for it to dirty a drug test or your blood stream (daily usage) then some does transfer into the milk supply. if your nursing a newborn every two hours then it's probably not a good idea but if it's an older baby who is on solids and maybe nurses in the evening before bed then you can smoke and wait for the effects to wear off same with drinking. I was always scared the pediatrician would find something in the blood work or urine samples so I always just didn't smoke while breastfeeding
@kerragannicole, I also read some about that. I also read their babies tend to be at a healthier weight, eat better and progress more quickly than those women who didn't smoke with their pregnancy.
@babynumber1, I was also reading not to long ago about how Jamaican women smoked and drank week infused teas while pregnant and breast feeding and it was saying that Jamaican babies have a lower rate of SIDS. More research would be nice.
@babynumber1, im not sure thats just what i heard but i know for sure you cant smoke weed while breastfeeding cause i asked someone close to me that is a lactation consultant
I really don't suggest putting any thing into your body that you wouldn't want your baby getting in their system. there is no way to know 100% either way but personally I wouldn't want to take that risk.
@rileysmommy2016, really? when do they do a drug test after the baby is born?
I was told by my ped, OB and nurse at the hospital that some THC can transfer to the baby.
even though it sounds like a bad idea i think the best thing you can do is ask a doctor. they would know for sure. but I want to know the answer as well lol
in many states pot is legal, so I found it to be an interesting question. I would assume it's safe because people who smoke for medical purposes still are allowed to while breastfeeding. @mcdodgen
I believe so but I wouldn't smoke weed right after you have a baby cause they do drug test
well it should be safe only if you don't do it alot and after you feed the baby, i smoked when i was pregnant everyday multiple times a day because of all day sickness i lost 25-30lbs smoking weed was the only way i could eat and feel better so i did i stopped at 29 weeks after the sickness started to subside i had my son at exactly 40 weeks they drug test me and him we was both clean he came out perfectly fine and normal weight everything, all i say that weed is not harmful if it didn't hurt while being pregnant it wont hurt while breastfeeding just don't smoke around the baby that's all.
