Does breastfeeding for the first time hurt? My mom and sisters did it, so I'm determined too. Also, when will my milk come in? I am 18 and a half weeks.

@peanuts1mom, no, the colostrum is important to baby in the first hours. milk comes in days later and baby will be on your boobs a lot to help it come down. your breast hurt when they are engorged but warm showers, warm/cool compresses take the edge off. once your milk is regulated your breast will go back to normal size.this doesn't mean your empty or can't produce milk. it just means your body is producing only what the baby needs at that time. it's becoming regulated. the more you feed, the more milk produced 😊 I had a oversupply in the beginning 😕 if your nurses know you are exclusively breastfeeding, formula shouldn't even be offered or in your room unless there is a problem that the lactation nurse diagnosis. she should be in the room with you at some point before you are discharged to explain concerns, methods, and talk about your milk.

@peanuts1mom, no the colostrum is enough, you can do formula if you plan to supplement

do they still give baby formula if you're only producing colostrum even if she latches on? @suprise4 @momtonoasophia

Not all women experience pain or discomfort. I didn't have any, but the women that I know who did said they have extremely sensitive nipples. You will have colostrum (premilk) for in the beginning and then your milk will come in days to possibly a week after.

Also if you want to get your milk supply up after your baby is here there's a website called milky-mama.com and they have a lot of different lactation things to help with milk supply, all natural. :)

breastfeeding doesn't and shouldn't hurt, even if it's your first time. My daughter latched on immediately when she was delivered and everything was fine until I started bruising on my nipples BUT that's only because she was latched incorrectly. make sure the lactation nurse shows you how to do it and I would even recommend classes before birth. practice really does make perfect with this lol...my milk came in fully a few days after she was born
