Everybodies doctor has different opinions on it. Basically they say left side is best because of blood flow but not everybody has the same anatomy right? So what cuts off circulation in one person doesn't have any restriction in another. So my doctor, who has a cardiovascular background, has said as long as you feel comfortable then it's safe - no matter the position. I get panicky flat on my back, but if I tilt up my right side I don't. So I sleep sorta on my back but not flat. But your doctor might feel differently. Never hurts to bring it up.
I'm in my 24th week and I have just now gotten to the point where it is uncomfortable to lay on my back. I still wake up sometimes in the middle of the night on my back with terrible pain in my back and abdomen but I am a back sleeper. my body is used to sleeping that way. my doctor says it isn't recommended but your body will let you know when to stop sleeping on your back......as in my case, I guess. I literally just started having the discomfort from it so I have been sleeping on my back up until now.
You can lay on your back tilted to the left too as long as Doc says it's ok. I stuff a pillow under my right side so I'm not really flat. I roll onto my back every night so that's the only compromise.

according to this, it won't harm your baby if you're sleeping on your back....this also gives you advice on comfortable positions http://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/ask-heidi/week-27/sleep-positions.aspx

First trimester it's no big deal but once the baby gets bigger it's safe to not lie on your back
