A warning to all mothers!
If you take your child to the doctor's office and they want to prick your baby's finger (and your baby is under 2 years of age), do NOT let them. Babies should have blood drawn from a prick in their heel not their finger. The reason for this is that your baby's fingers are too thin and it could injure them without meaning to. If they prick your child's finger before 2 years of age, doctors risk causing nerve damage.
I recently made the mistake of letting my daughter's doctor prick her finger instead of her heel. This caused my daughter to bleed on and off for 6 hours, and now her finger had a nasty bruise around where she was pricked. Not only that but her finger has a little slice (it looks like a paper cut, but it goes much deeper) from it as well. Now whenever I go to check on her finger to insure it is healing properly she won't let me near her hand because it hurts.
I'm simply giving everyone a warning. I do not wish for any mother to have to go through this.
I didn't know this thanks for the info! Although my kids Doctor always pricks their feet it does explain an incident my son had when he was one. He cut his finger on some cardboard (only he would find a way) but the cut was so small I could barely see it. His finger bled for hours I was afraid it'd never stop.
it's something we're taught from day one. if you need to draw blood from a baby, take it from the heel. the only reason I didn't argue with the doctors is because I haven't graduated from school yet, and I figured "she must have a valid reason for choosing to do it in her finger". I completely regret not demanding they do it in her heel. it would have saved me a lot of stressing thinking that my 1yr old would need a stitch from a stupid first prick.
