I didn't have a baby shower. All my husband's family lives out of state. My family doesn't speak to me. Also the last baby I had was about 8 years ago. So we made a registry and for the most part everyone ordered from it. Plus it was on Amazon. Made things so much easier in the long run. You can have a registry regardless of whether you have a shower or not.
It's nice to have one for when you choose what brand/make of car seat or stroller (if you aren't buying your own) but most people will buy you what they want to. I made one early, around Christmas, because family kept asking what I wanted/needed. If there are specific brands, I would just let everyone know your preference.
No but if you want to give people an idea of specific stuff you want then it's a good idea. plus you get welcome bags from target and babies r us if you go in and make one. and who doesn't love free stuff.

It's pointless because not everyone get you stuff off of it. I did and ppl just brought what they wanted to my baby shower
