Not baby related but need a bit of a rant about mental health and parenting. Has anyone else…

Not baby related but need a bit of a rant about mental health and parenting. Has anyone else struggled with mental health issues? I seem to be having the rage today😂 I had a tough childhood and hit depression hard when I was in my early teens. I self harmed very badly and kept it to myself for a year until my mum found one of my blades. My mum is a mental health professional so I thought that she would be understanding but she was the complete opposite. She likes to victimise herself in everything. It's quite sickening. I'd gone to school and put the blade in my make up bag, zipped up on my bookcase. I came home and my mum had been cleaning my room so had been snooping through my stuff and found the blade in the bag. She tried to tell me that she found it on the floor and went off on one about how it was dangerous and her or the cat could have hurt themselves on it. I knew for sure I'd hidden it so there was no way it was on the floor. I still don't understand why she did that to this day. She said nothing about the self harm and ignored my feelings for months until I overdosed on her medication (propanolol). I was laid there in hospital hooked up to all sorts and completely out of it and she just told me she hated me, that I was ruining her relationship with her then man and left me by myself. I was 14 and very close to dying. I didn't realise that what she was doing was wrong until social services got involved and I almost got put in care. My doctor must have assessed the situation in the hospital and reported her. Now she wonders why I've shut her out of my pregnancy and why we don't have much of a relationship. It's taught me a lot about parenting and I will try to be the best mother possible, not like my mum. I don't understand how parents can treat their children how I was treated, especially when mental health is involved. Luckily I have got through it by myself and not harmed myself in almost 2 years now. I had to explain this all to my midwife because I find blood tests very hard due to being in the hospital by myself when I overdosed and the doctors tried every possible point to get blood from me and it hurt so much. I was scared and screaming but they had to get blood somehow to test how much medication I'd taken. It's very traumatising for me and I got the old 'you won't cope in labour if you can't deal with blood tests' so I had to tell her and she looked so embarrassed bless her. I'm fine with needles (I even have a tattoo and am getting more) it's just the idea of blood tests.

I can relate although I didn't self harm, my mum dragged me through a load of shit, she married a pervert.. My real dad was physically abusive to me, I ended up in care and mine and my parents relationships have been awful! I stupidly let my mother back in when I was pregnant with my son my partner told her she had one chance to be a nan! She screwed up 12 weeks after he was born, my nan had a severe stroke which ultimately killed her 2 weeks later.. My nan and I were very close and I posted to Facebook saying my heart was breaking, my 'mother' like yours made it about her, getting in my face telling me she told me not to post to Facebook (a 21 year old adult at the time mind you) and in a rage I told her what I always thought, I said 'I wish it was you in that hospital bed instead of nan, cause at least she loved me!' Anyways a few days go by and she messages my oh to say forget what was said in anger.. (She didn't message me once) and then pretty much a day later she blocked us! I haven't heard from her since and that was 9m ago.. My son is 1 on Wednesday and he wouldn't have a clue who she was! She doesn't even know I'm pregnant again and quite frankly I don't care. She will never be in my life again and I won't have her poisonous self around my babies.. You do what is best for your little family, but from someone who can relate, I would say don't waste your time.. At least we know how not to be a parent! Xxx

You must have had your reasons to feel the way you did when you were a teen. It sounds like you felt in a dark place without any support from your mum. After the overdose n trauma from the docs blood taking its bound to have a knock on effect. I'm sure many of us would feel the same! Labour is going to be a whole new experience, you know you can manage pain from past experience and I'm sure you know exactly how you want to support and love your child. I hope everything works out for you what ever you decide x

I know how you feel with self harming and depression, but luckily my mum was the complete opposite, she was so supportive and gave me all the help I needed when I took a huge depression turn around 28 weeks pregnant. She first called my family nurse to get help, who in turn called CAMHS and I ultimately had to tell about self harming. She was so supportive due to going through similar when she was younger and now does everything she can to stop me going down that road when she can see me getting down. Seems I've been lucky there, but at least you have other people around you that you can go to such as your midwife, mine has no idea about that. If you're doing better without your mum, good on you, I'd rather be on my own and do better than have an unsupporting mum who mades things so much harder xx
