It's to test for gestational diabetes. The first one, you have to drink a sugary substance and have your blood drawn 1 hour after you finish. If you fail the first one, you have to do it again, but without eating for three hours. @marissacc22

I never had to do this with my daughter. and I gave birth already :) I didn't have a choice of epidural. it just happened.
