No. it converts. it goes from rear facing to front facing. doesn't have to be in the middle.@adevlin2,

my 21 month old has this one but I thought it was mandatory to be in the middle facing forward to be latched (cause of the way its built)

I have the same one ! The pregnancy center I tested out received a few brand new ones and gave me one! I also got a infant carrier car seat but I just love this one as well!
