again, not pregnancy related but I need to rant before I burst into tears from all the hormones I'm carrying. I was asked to lecture 3rd yr uni students. I've never done anything like this before in my life but I though it's a fantastic opportunity and I'd be mad to refuse the experience. so, carried out my first lecture wed. I was in the biggest lecture hall, with a stage and podium so this added to my already nervous disposition. I knew I was nervous as my voice was shaky and zipped through the slides in 40 mins...would normally take 50. despite all that I came away feeling proud that I'd achieved something like that..thinking that 'it can now o ly get better'. Today I did 3 seminars...whilst the first group were queuing I stood round a corner and could hear a group of girls chatting about me. saying they could tell I was nervous, it was dead quick they queued longer than they were in the lecture etc etc and pointing out all things I already knew. this hurt my feelings a bit but I though I'd address it in the seminar. so started off saying I just wanted to say thanks for your patience I know I was nervous and standing in front of 70 faces on a stage in the biggest theatre is very scarey especially for my first time. some girls sniggered but I thought 'ha yes I did hear you'. anyway, it went ok after that. the second class went fab but the third class dampened my spirits again. they just sat there. literally. there was no interaction from any questions I threw out there, from any discussions I tried to start. after 25 mins of trying I gave up. spirits dampened yet again. now I feel like I want to cry. are there any teachers out there who could give me tops etc on difficult classes. I've never done this before, I need to stop the tumbleweeds from rolling! !!

I'm a trainer (similar to a teaching just In The automotive industry) every groups different so don't take it personally, if people don't respond i pick people out to answer it. Or I say we are going to be here a very long time unless someone answers. And make eye contact with a student and raise my eyebrows (makes people feel compelled to talk try it). If they are flat I make them all stand up then sit down again then I go right lets start again, and say good morning or whatever, another trick it to stand at the door and greet each student individually as the walk it it's quite a territorial move but can help take control x hope this helps x

thanks ladies. I just didn't realise it would be so hard. I feel a bit more motivated. I think I'm going to be doing alot of reading notes during the next lecture. I didn't want to do that cos it's not natural but there's a lot of policy I need to get across. I'm deffo going to have to 'Man up' so to speak. I'm just not used to being in the spot light. xxx

If there's no interaction in a group discussion then make a pair of students do a 'presentation' with q&a from the rest of the seminar group.(about that weeks topic) It will force them to be more alert. at least two people will have to work together on something related to the lecture /what you would have been discussing and students are more likely to interact with peers than 'authority'. They will also want to be more engaged because they will want to know what's going on when it's their turn to do the topic presentation
