I am feeling deeply discouraged.. I am 8 days pp, and my baby has been in NICU for all of those 8 days. I have been pumping faithfully every 3 hours and taking it to the hospital for her. For her to come home she needs to get to full feeding (which i cant get a steady answer from any nurse of what that is. I have gotten 60, 81, and 70ml) and shes at 20ml as of today. I am so heart broken that they are feeding her from a bottle just to control how much shes getting.. They wont let me breastfeed until she is at full feeding.. Well that can be a week or two depends on how they are increasing..
Im freaking out that shes going to be so connected to a bottle and not want me.. It honestly scares me shitless... My entire pregnancy i longed to breastfeed her and connect with her. Im already dealing with postpartum depression, having my baby even be in the NICU, and now I'm freaking out because she might not even want to breast feed.. Im struggling mamas.. I am running low on hope.. Please help me..

ill be praying. that cant be easy. stay positive and just keep being the good persistent mama you have been the last 8 days! you got this. and if the nurses cant give you a direct answer then ask to speak to a doctor. you have the right. its your babys health

don't discourage too much. if she is drinking your breast milk she will smell it on you. she will just have to learn to latch. I also will be keeping you both in my prayers.

how is that fair I've heard that even in NICU it's best to breastfeed not only for that connection but also because it helps steady your babies vitals. I would talk to someone higher up then a nurse even the head of the hospital about it. but in Washington state breastfeeding is incredibly pushed for mom and babies so they work with you more. I hope you get to connect with your baby.

Yes, if she knows the taste and smell of your breast milk, she will learn to latch. The day you can finally breastfeed, be patient with her because she needs to learn how to latch and suck correctly just like you need to learn! It is a process, and it will probably hurt until you two can figure out a good latch together....but please don't be discouraged or give up! Your baby loves you, you are mom and there is NO replacement for mom!!! Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and it's SO worth all the struggles. Be patient, be kind to yourself, and have faith. Make sure you push to speak with a CERTIFIED lactation consultant when the time comes, to help you with tricks to latch and positions to get comfortable in. You are an amazing mommy for all the love you are giving your girl and she will be stronger than ever soon, I promise!!! You will look back at these days as a distant memory some day and think, you know, we survived as a family together, and your lil one is such a fighter! And btw, they have the ability to weigh your baby before and after each feed to check how much she is eating!!! They do this at the hospital for breastfeeding groups here, I never went because we never had the time but I was told about this when I had my baby girl 4 months ago.

when my daughter was in the nicu right after birth they did the same thing to me and she ate very little and started losing weight... it may take some time but just stay derermined and when she gets out keep working on breast feeding and you will do fine mamma. best wishes to you and your young one

you have to be pushy and demanding if you want her to breast feed tell them you want to try and no isnt the correct answer i had the same issues with my son when he was in the nicu
