Only 1 week in and the lactation consultants have me pumping. Baby lost 10% , no poop for over 24…

it's normal for breastfed babies not to poop daily. They can go about 10 days. Babies often lose weight in the beginning. What you pump is not an indication of what you make. Baby gets more than a pump. The more you supplement the less you will make. Breast feeding is a supply and demand thing. In the beginning you make more than you enough so you could just be regulating.

at 10% loss lactation consultants always say supplement but that doesn't mean replace a feeding. still offer baby the breast once baby is finished on each breast (if baby is still hungry) then top of with formula. If you do replace a feeding with formula make sure you pump.

however try oatmeal, fenugreek, lactation cookies, feeding on demand, and make sure you're taking in an extra 500 calories for baby.

What @mamachandler said. Totally normal for baby to lose a little in the beginning especially when exclusively breastfed. Just keep feeding on demand. Honestly I wouldn't even mess with the pump until you're about a month/6 weeks in. That's when your supply is more established.

That's what my lactation consultants are having me do .. And it did work by bringing in my milk because it was still transitional. I was only able to give him about 25 ml of milk from both breasts in a feeding when he was 5 days old. Tried the pump the first night and milk had come in, breasts engorged and he had gained 2oz. It's a hospital grade because I want to avoid formula at all cost unless I know I can't make enough to feed. Thank you ladies

I went through this too. Nurse your baby a full feed then immediately after offer 2oz of formula. And immediately after that pump for 10-20 Minutes. Or enough for at least one let down. If someone else can give the bottle it will take a lot of stress of you because it is a lot of work, especially in the beginning when you're working to build your supply. I had to nurse every two hours. I see some Moms commenting as if it's a walk in the park but please remember it's different for everyone, it really is so much harder for some women especially in the beginning. As far as pooping goes, our lactation consultant said a breastfed baby can go 4-7 days without a bowel moment and it wouldn't be a concern, what you have to watch for are the wet diapers. Good luck!!! I'm 7 months in and I can promise you there is light at the end of the tunnel!

By the way, just saw your sons name is Lucas 😊 love it! That's our boy name too if we're ever blessed with one. Ps don't worry so much about how much milk your getting when you pump. It's just for stimulating at this point.

@maybabemommy, thank you, and yea unfortunately he's already cluster feeding and I'm dealing with him constantly just wanting to be attached to the boob even when he's not hungry and I don't have anyone else with me at home to take him while I pump or even try to eat. Another road block I've got to conquer lol

@maybabemommy, also there isn't any possible way I can pump 2 oz. I can feed him almost 2 by nursing but the pump just doesn't give me that and it's so inconvenient to go back and forth with him and the pump, even if it is electric

@myliltadpole1116, sorry I thought they had you supplementing with formula. If you can feed him that much just by nursing sounds like you are doing great, his stomach is tiny. Cluster feeding is the worst, unfortunately it's actually good that he's nursing so much, then you shouldn't have to worry about pumping. It was very hard for me in the beginning, I was delirious with exhaustion haha I lived off of bananas and peanut butter and jelly and whatever anyone brought me. Btw I don't recommend bananas, I found out they were making my baby super fussy. Take a little time for yourself, even a few minutes here and there, this time passes so fast, you'll look back and wonder where it at went!

I've been told my son's weight loss was from it being artificially inflated from iv fluids in labor

@whosmomma, that's what I learned afterward as well, but they were still considering it all of his weight. We're doing well now too:)

I know right! I had a induction and terrible first 48 hours my nurse kept coming in with a bottle of formula every 2 hours saying baby need to eat. thank God I had the support system of his father who I told I was going to breastfeed when I first found out I was pregnant. told the lady to back off, we got a little donor milk, and my babies digestive flora wasn't ruined for life :)

@whosmomma, yikes, they probably would have tried that on me too if I hadn't been leaking . I don't have anything against formula I just wanted to give it my best shot at breastfeeding if I could
