okay ladies, I need a little advice...My boyfriend's mom wants to be called Nana by our child (when he/she is old enough to talk) since my boyfriend's son (2) already calls her that. The only problem is my mom is called Nana by her already 5 granddaughters (the oldest being 9). I don't want to be rude and tell her "oh my mom came up with that name before you, so you're going to have to pick a different one" and I'm sure as hell not going to tell my mother that her 6th grandchild is going to have to call her something different. My boyfriend is indifferent to it because he doesn't know why it's such a big deal his exact words were "why can't they both be Nana?" Because! I don't want to have to tell my kids "okay, let's go to Nana's" and them to have to guess which one or get them confused. I may just be overreacting and it's not actually that big of a deal but it means a big deal to both our mother's....
you could call them Nana and then their first name.. for ex my cousin calls his grandmothers granny Cindy and granny bailey
My mom picked that name only because all my nieces have divorced and remarried parents so already have a shit ton of grandma's so she chose Nana. Our child is going to have a 2 grandma's, 2 grandpa's , (now) 2 Nana's and a Papa. He/she is going to be confused enough as it is lol my dad goes by Grandpa Bob, step mom= Grandma Kim (their choices because I think using an elder's first name is disrespectful), mom= Nana, Step dad= Papa, my boyfriend's dad and his dad's girlfriend will just go by Grandma and Grandpa and my boyfriend's mom wants to go by Nana. Like they already have to remember the different grandma and grandpa's. Idk I guess I'm biased because my mom did come up with the name first and all her grandchildren call her that and it's a special thing for her @foreveryoung247
I had 3 nannys growing up lol haha and my daughter will have 3 nanas because my brother in laws girlfriend told my MIL she can't be the name she picked... lol I'm honestly just gonna let her call whoever whatever she wants lol
Use the first letter of her last name like Nana K or Nana H something like that
yes they do @lakecturner, I never thought about that, I like that idea:) @crunchymomma I like the way you think lmao
I have two nanas both on my mom's side my mom's mom and my grandma's mom I call me mom's mom Nana and my great grandma Wanda Nana, if you don't want to use the first name we also would tell me little brother Nana in suchansuch town... do they live in different towns?
you could always just secretly teach your kids at home that one is "Nana __" so when they hear your child say it you can just say "idk where they learned that but they've been saying it recently" lol.
hopefully they don't get offended, I don't think my mom is that petty but I feel like his mom would be petty and say things like "why can't I just be plain old Nana" and I feel like using an elder's first name is a sign of disrespect (at least that's how I was raised) @crunchymomma @sarahemccormick
I thought of that, I just wouldn't know what to add to their names:/ and I always worry that if I add something to their name they'll get offended @mamamj
My daughter has 2 Nana's. one is her daddy's grandma, so he was raised calling her Nana and that's what we all called her before my daughter was even conceived. well now my daughter's father mom wanted to be called nana, so she is. my daughter's grandmother is Nana, and my daughter's great grandmother is called "Nana G" (I guess cause they say she's so thug she's a G or something. Idk. their logic behind it is kinda stupid. but oh well)
but she's only 3 and she clearly knows the difference between Nana and Nana G.
maybe try something like that?
so if ones name is Dorothy and ones name is grace maybe they could be Nana D and Nana G? idk. just an idea.
I guess you could always have the baby call them each Nana ________ (whatever their name is, fill in the blank)
I don't think it is that big of a deal for them to be called the same thing. for traveling purposes or what have you, you can specify by adding a last name or characteristic. Our oldest refers to both grandpa's as Papa - one is just Papa and the other is dubbed Papa Truck because he drives a semi. Same for grandma's, both are grandma but one had a Yorkie named Scooter so she is Scooter Grandma
I've always been raised to where calling an elder by their first name is disrespectful @jess1ca
