I know this is an older post but just wanted to share with you, I had group b strep, gave birth at 38 weeks, had one lot of antibiotics because my labour was so fast, got my perfect natural birth and gave birth to my baby boy with no complications and didn't need to stay in hospital x

what @nashkay said is pretty much spot on. we do carry it and don't even know it however can be fatal for a baby to get it. I disagree with them not screening routinely because if they did they would have spotted it in my mum and my sister would be 10 years old on the 2nd of January.. try your hardest to demand for it both of you. xxx

@cayleighnatasha, That's very sad. I know it can be fatal, I do know someone who lost their baby to it years ago, but my midwife said because the statistics for it being fatal are so low, they NHS won't let them test every woman for it. My midwife says she'll test me at my 38 week check if I haven't had baby by then as she prefers to but she says technically she's not suppose to x

@nashkay, Thank you I'll look into it a lot more. @cayleighnatasha that's so sad for your family and most definitely should be routinely screened for if it could prevent that. That's so frightening xx

Erm not the best story but my mum was pregnant with my sister completely normal pregnancy and she gave birth to her at full term thinking everything was fine midwives didn't spot her breathing etc was different till my mum said it looks not normal as my mum had had 4 kids prior to this so she spotted it straight away and they rushed them both of to a bigger and better hospital and at 2 days old my little sister unfortunately passed away.. not always like this but that's my story thats why they keep testing me for it as it's in my family history and will put me on antibiotics if my tests ever come back positive so far all been negative. The difficulties of group b strep is that one day you might not have it but one day you might have it. Don't mean to scare you but people need to realise how serious and fatal it can be xxx

My midwife told me that group B Strep is something that most people carry in their system and it doesn't cause any problems. During pregnancy, if you have it in your system it can be passed to baby during labour and sometimes causes baby to be very sick. However because the statistics of this are quite low, my midwife said that typically women aren't tested for it unless they have had really excess discharge at the later stages of pregnancy or a change in anything down "there". If a women is tested and comes back as positive when in the later stages of pregnancy then she'll simply require an antibiotic drip during labour to stop the infection crossing over to baby. It's not as scary as they make out and most people who carry GBS in their system never know it because it doesn't exhibit symptoms and doesn't harm you.
