A midwife is a certified nurse that you see through pregnancy. Typically (through my experience) a midwife takes their time with you, makes sure you have all of your questions answered, and is more natural minded (avoids unnecessary medical interventions). An OB is more medical minded. Again, this has been my experience.
A midwife is God's gift to mothers. They are trained in pregnancy and birth whereas as an obgyn is actually a surgeon and trained for medical emergencies that require surgery or high risk pregnancies. If you have a normal, healthy pregnancy and baby, an obgyn, hospital, etc ARE NOT needed. A midwife can handle everything pregnancy related up until your baby is at least 6 weeks old. At that point, you can go back to a doctor or continue your midwifery care. A midwife appt can last up to an hour while an obgyn appt will be 10 to 15 minutes max. And most of that is waiting for the doctor to come into the room. Midwives are attentive, gentle, and caring. They are thorough and allow you to take the lead in YOUR pregnancy and delivery instead of telling you what to do.
I delivered my twins with an obgyn in a hospital. My last baby girl was delivered at home with my midwife and her attendant.

A midwife is apparently more personal, and the doctor is more medical. I've never had a midwife, just what I've gathered from others.
