Today I was approached by one of my little cousins (he's about 4 or 5) and he asked me who my dad was and where he was... I didn't know how to tell him that my dad has never been in my life and we don't talk about him in my family for personal reasons. My father comes around the family every once in a blue moon (like every 7-10 years) and I know this little boy will eventually meet him and I didn't want him to know that that man is my father (again personal reasons). He's also grown up with his father in the household so I feel like he wouldn't understand why my father isn't around when his is. I'm a new mommy to a 3 month old little girl so I'm not experienced in explaining things to children. I had to awkwardly walk away from him without giving him an explanation, but I felt bad because he's just a child. He doesn't understand, and I felt like he shouldn't have been ignored. It was just a touchy subject he asked about. Mom's how would you explain something like that to a child or how would you explain something serious to a little kid?
