No. I think that at the hospital when they do the car seat check it has to be an infant one

I know PLENTY of people who only got the convertible ones... were getting both though..

It definitely doesn't have to be an infant one you can get a convertible one just make sure it's for an infant 5 pounds & up graco has some good ones or Chicco
