Not awful, but it doesn't not hurt, if that makes sense. I had a contraction during it so that's where a lot of my pain came from, it felt like a sharp sting or a pinch with some pressure.
all I felt was the numbing shot and then pressure and that was it! literally a life saver, I was in so much pain since I was on pitocin! Getting the epidural made me progress from 5cm to 10 within an hour. You feel two contractions after, not as bad as you were having then bam, all gone! I loved it. I was scared to get it to but my contractions literally started being back to back and lasting long periods of time. I literally jumped up when they came in to do it. (not really since I was in so much pain)
It sucks if your mid contraction when they put it in...and honestly it does hurt. But once its over, and its inserted, you dont feel a thing. Its a great option, especially if its your first child. I have had three epidurals, had my last son natural, and I will be having this baby boy natural as well.

honestly the IV they put in your hand is worse than getting an epidural
