I have a singer heavy duty sewing machine because I occasionally need to sew leather but it does little things just fine too. I would look at what crafts you plan on doing most and see which one fits that
A sewing machine you can do most everything with. Serger ma finish edges, and can make clothes. However almost any project will need to be completed with a sewing machine. You'll need one of those first and later can decide if you want to extend your skills with a serger.

If you get a serger you'll also need a sewing machine but if you get a sewing machine you won't NEED a serger.
