thank you notes are ridiculous. and being offended that you didn't get one is even more ridiculous (given that you have me the gift in person and I thanked you in person). like damn I showed my gratitude and it was genuine why the hell do I need to put it in writing. I really hate thank you notes. I don't get why saying thank you to their face or even over the phone isn't good enough.

Because it comes from an old place of etiquette. People sometimes forget that you thanked them personally on a gift they technically aren't obligated to purchase for you in the first place. So the cost of a thank you note which is probably $30 including stamps for all the people that invested more time and money into your gift... it's the action that people remember...

I understand what you are saying but I also don't think them forgetting that I thanked them calls for a note. I always thank people no matter what in person. I even throw in a few comments on how useful it will be so they can see my gratitude. if my grandmother weren't constantly bugging me about writing thank you notes then I wouldn't. it's something that seems to be dying out anyway. which is fine by me.
